If it was that easy I would not be asking for help. As I did install
mysql, php, apache, mod php, etc all down the list.
Configure Command:
'./configure' '--prefix=/usr' '--datadir=/usr/share/php'
'--mandir=/usr/share/man' '--bindir=/usr/bin' '--libdir=/usr/share'
'--includedir=/usr/include' '--sysconfdir=/etc' '--with-_lib=lib'
'--with-config-file-path=/etc' '--with-exec-dir=/usr/lib/php/bin'
'--disable-debug' '--enable-inline-optimization'
'--enable-memory-limit' '--enable-magic-quotes' '--enable-safe-mode'
'--enable-sigchild' '--disable-ctype' '--disable-session'
'--without-mysql' '--disable-cli' '--without-pear' '--with-openssl'
'--with-apxs2=/usr/sbin/apxs2-prefork' 'i586-suse-linux'

Tryign to get some scripts to work in PHP, and the yare not working,
LOL! That's a great typo! The yare - the yare is type of creature best suited for lounging around. Often they are given tasks and found not working. :)
one package I tried (PHPBB 2) installing gives me the error "he PHP configuration on your server doesn't support the database type that you chose"

Not quite sure what you mean. I have PHP and MySQL working pretty much out of the box on all my systems.
Here's a (very outdated) article on Novell's site about how to get it working.

There's this one, too, which seems to do with XAMPP.

Now, IIRC, there is no need to setup the groups mentioned in the article. I just went to yast, installed the PHP and MySQL versions I liked and then rebooted. (I'm a Windows user after all.)
HTH!
