I was trying to work out why my KDE2 installation was maxing out my swap file and slowing to a stop. I noticed that I was still running /opt/kde/bin/kdm to run kde2!!! Also, Tor suggested that I check /etc/ld.so.config to see if it contained /opt/kde2/lib /usr/lib/qt2/lib It didn't. So, I added those two lines and ran ldconfig. I edited the kdm script to change kde to kde2 and the path to /opt/kde2/bin/kdm Then I rebooted to make the changes effect. (Is there a way to change the kdm without rebooting?) That's when the problems started. I get a ton of error messages while the kernel is booting, and a message about "XBINDIR" not binding, or something like that. It goes by too fast to read. Here is an example of the messages: /sbin/init.d/rc2.d/S20rusersd: /etc/rc.config.d/idedma.rc.config: Permission deinied The same for S20rwhod, S20sendmail, and S21 stuff, etc.... Which is will I will be supprised if this email gets out. What do I do to fix this stuff.
