I use a custom-built daily rsync employing hard links retaining up to 7
days of data per machine, the most recent of which gets backed up "now
and again" to tape using (gnu or s)tar or cpio. It gives me
daily backups that take a few minutes (because they only copy what has
changed) and "whenever" backups that are still complete enough (I don't
back up the OS but I do back up /etc and a few others with /home).
For "simple" backups to tape you can't really go wrong with gnutar or
cpio (use the crc format). And please, people, don't use DDS (DAT),
use DLT or VXA or something worthwhile.
Oh, for the the love of Pete, don't compress.
