Hello, can anyone recommend an affordable and reliable backup software that I can use to backup my local server? It should have a database with the used media and the sessions and files on those media. Would like to be able to configure backup/restore jobs with a ssh client like putty. Sandy
Mondo WAS the best project (open-source) out there for this task. It was what I was using to duplicate production machines. However, Frickin! Travis M. Schaffner (travis@fastservers.net) at FastServers.net decided to bring legal actions against one of the main contributors to the project, effectively terminating it. I don't know if you can find some archives or not.... see mondorescue.org for more / continuing information. Grrrrrrr! B-) On Thursday 02 December 2004 01:54 pm, Sandy Drobic wrote:

Chill, dude! The legal hassle has ended. Mondo is safe and the "only" down-side was that Ray Sanders (primary Mondo author) is stuck with the legal fees it took to get the FastServers.net folks to back down. Hello everyone!
For those of you in the U.S I hope you had a pleasant holiday weekend.
Just writing to let you all know FastServers has agreed in principle to cease any and all actions against me. Currently my attorney and I are waiting for something in writing.
FastServers will not, however reimburse me for my legal fees, which amount to nearly $2,000.00 at this time. :-(
I'm in the process of moving over the next two weeks, however, I should have a final update in the next few days. At this point I cannot forsee any "deal breakers" coming up.

I just visited the site, unfortunately it's still closed down. Bookmarked it for the future. (°-^)
The mailing list has remained active througout the debacle with FastServers.net. Archives of that list are accessible on the SourceForget Web site: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum=mondo-devel. I'm sure a notice will be sent there when Ray gets everything back on firm footing. I should add that one person (known to me only as "Mike" of "Mike 'n Jane") has taken on SuSE-specific installation and configuration assistance for Mondo / Mindi: http://www.mikenjane.net/~mike/.

OK. Thanks. I was confused because Ray Sanders (as in Randall's post:

Not only is he not mentioned as the "primary Mondo author", but his name is not mentioned anywhere that I could find on the site. Anyway, this seems like a great piece of software. Thanks,

Ray isn't the primary author. He is doing the PXE support for Mondo. Hugo is still the primary coder. The problems arose when Ray was threatened by the company he worked for. Hugo stood up as he had a right to, and tell everyone that until folks stopped with the legal entanglements, he wasn't allowing work to proceed. At the present time we are awaiting the final word from both of them. I believe that Ray is waiting for the paperwork to come in so that they will leave him alone. He is also moving at the time so that might also cause a delay. Not to worry.. Now the good news is that the website is back up. I just checked both the main site, and my mirror. Things seem to be back to normal. I've also gotten a fix for the newt problem from SUSE!. Yep.. Finally after a couple of years gotten an answer to my feedback. I've done some preliminary testing here, and it is working. Once tested thoroughly, I'll be adding the files to my site. Sandy, Most of the commercial backup vendors support linux and/or SUSE, so you might want to use whatever your corp. standard is. Also Arkeia used to have a free version of their backup software. It was fully functional except for tape library support as I recall. The only GPL solution I know that provides the inventory you are talking about is Amanda, but I have not used it, so I can't say how good or bad it is. Greg

My previous company used ArcServe for Windows and the linux client for our unix servers. It did work, but it also cost an arm and a leg to buy the client licenses and the advanced server version of arcserve. Can't afford that for my private server. :-/

The last free version was 4.2 IIRC. I'll check it out anyway. Thanks for the reminder, I'd forgotten Arceia completely. (^-^)

I'll try that one first and tell about my experience in the next days. Provided I can switch the tape to the new system with one arm in a cast. Sandy

Good luck with that. I'm not sure I could do it with one arm. Also, if this is a scsi-based tape, with linux I think you have to call stinit once before the tape (/dev/st0) is accessible. At least that is what I have to do, but I have a high-end tape drive (LTO). I don't know where that little gem is documented. Someone on the list told me about it a year ago. Greg

I'm rather doubtful as well.

I'll try to grab the unused DLT4000 in our company and put it in an external case. That way I might actually be able to connect it to my server. That will probably be my weekend project to get the backup up and running. So far I didn't use stinit, but I recall that I had to check the existence of some devices before using the tape. Sandy

If you need stinit, all I had to do with SUSE 9.2 is call it once per boot to get the st (streaming tape?) module loaded (lsmod will show you the loaded modules). With 8.2, I think I had to edit /etc/stinit.conf and add an entry for my tape drive. Greg -- Greg Freemyer
Depending on the type of backup you want, I highly suggest you try storebackup.... It backups to disk. It the best there ever was... Jerry On Thursday 02 December 2004 21:54, Sandy Drobic wrote:

Okay, fired up yast and selected amanda. To resolve dependencies it tells me to install the samba client? A bit strange but I'll give it a try anyway. Some years ago I tested taper which was very easy to configure and use, but not very reliable. It seemed to have poor performance and consumed a lot of memory as well, making it prone to crash. Does anyone know if the program has matured with time? Sandy

That's because AMANDA (the 'N' is "Network") is primarily a network backup program. Highly flexible, as I understand, but not really oriented toward very small installations. I sure do wish Danz would port Retrospect to Linux. God, I miss that software. I used it first on the Macintosh, then on Windows and now... Still waiting. Spoiled, and waiting.

I use a custom-built daily rsync employing hard links retaining up to 7
days of data per machine, the most recent of which gets backed up "now
and again" to tape using (gnu or s)tar or cpio. It gives me
daily backups that take a few minutes (because they only copy what has
changed) and "whenever" backups that are still complete enough (I don't
back up the OS but I do back up /etc and a few others with /home).
For "simple" backups to tape you can't really go wrong with gnutar or
cpio (use the crc format). And please, people, don't use DDS (DAT),
use DLT or VXA or something worthwhile.
Oh, for the the love of Pete, don't compress.

Sandy, I'm using Arkeia Network Backup 5.2.0 and haven't had any "big" problems. There is a free version of the 5.x called Arkeia Light. You can shell in to your box and run it. The manual for the commands is huge if you want to print it out (around 300 pages, if I remember correctly). I'm using it with a ADIC FastStor2 LTO2 autoloader that is equipped with a barcode reader and everything works fine. Took a small bit of work to get it working though. The couple of times I contacted support (web support), I received a rapid reponse to my ticket. Try the Light version and if it fits, maybe look at the pay for version. John
