I took a look at a number of web pages describing how to install, or reinstall OS X, and that does not seem to be significantly different in complexity from any other OS. Tony, you're either over stating the simplicity of installing OS X or you're in good company in overstating the difficulty of installing Linux, or both.
<snip> I had to respond to this. Any fool can put an OS X system disk into any Apple box and be on the air in 20 minutes, and most of that time is spent having a beer. That is somewhat of a "cheat" because one is only going to put an OS X disk into an Apple box (unless they're running Virtual Box); there is no fussing with various video drivers, various CPUs, various ethernet cards, various sound cards, and the list goes on. The situation is pre-destined for success. And I would say that in 1999 (or maybe earlier), when I stuffed my first Caldera install disk into a big ugly desktop box, the installation was close to that for the Mac Powerbook that I had at the time (and still own). But no longer. There is a large contingent of linux users that like to feel "more skilled" in that they have the ability to tweak a linux box to act in an appropriate fashion. But there are others that view a computer as a screwdriver, i.e. a tool to get something else done. For those, the computer is not the end unto itself, and those users will pick the shortest, simplest route to getting work done. There was a time when I viewed an open-source Linux box as the wave of the future. That time has passed. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
