Go back to auto drop subfs. I dropped it on my backup box for the CDRW and no problems since then.
My DVD and CDRW devices are working fine with subfs. For USB devices, switching from subfs to auto is supposed to mean set HOTPLUG_USE_SUBFS to no. I tried that, put a line in fstab that says the filesystem is auto, and tried to mount. The mount command just hangs and at shutdown hda7 cannot be unmounted! This is worse than when using subfs, because then I at least get a tidy error message and no after-effects. Again, there seem to be multiple symptoms with different solutions working for different people.
