So it's not a zipped file? Is this before or after gunzip? gunzip will unzip the file and give you a normal tar file, and if you have a normal tar file you shouldn't use the z flag to tar. "tar xvf file.tar" is enough in that case.
gunzip gives a "not in gzip format" message gzip -d gives the same message,
gunzip and gzip -d should be the same thing. gunzip normally is just a symlink to gzip, and gzip invokes -d when it detects that it has been called as gunzip.
So it's not a zip file. What does "file <filename>" tell you?
If "the browser in gnome" (whatever that is, do you mean galeon? Are you using nautilus as a web browser?) tries to save it as html, odds are that you're getting some error page, like "Connection timed out" instead. That's happened to me several times. Or perhaps it's a redirection page and you're trying to "right-click->save as", which won't work in any OS?!
Mandrake 9.0 was ok, but updating the system is not easy either, and no current KDE, or wine config/setup tool either
SuSE is using the debian config tool for wine, as far as I know. It should be available for red hat and mandrake too.
Ya, I know. It wouldn't do anything, so I never got to the .tar stage. It was a .tgz so either gunzip or tar xvzf should've worked. As I state in another post, rebooting and then dl'ing the file again worked, for what reason... ? It's acting as it should. I have just never had quite this particular problem or behavior before and It was getting damn frustrating. Sometimes, I have to rant (ugly and silly as it may be)! :) Cheers, Curtis. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.7 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE+fVCq7WVLiDrqeksRAicnAJ9SJQCv19ZXBk9c+jEaMWo71F335ACeKNVO 6NxpDpGt837RYQB/oxkvaU8= =Tmdv -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
