If you do not remove the original Perl package - I'd say "yes". Make sure that you do not have two different perl packages in different subdirectories.
The purpose of the rebuild is to remove -ldb and -lgdbm from the "link line".
2. What is the best way to do it: get the source RPM and modify that, or get a regular perl distro and install "normally"? Either way, how can I make sure that all the SuSE requirements are met for the build?
I'd recommend to use the SRPM and modify it. Good luck!
