"Exploiting lightning for practical research". A mitad de la primera columna, mientras va hablando de rayos y esas cosas, dice: Franklin set out and documented his findings in great detail, which is more that can be said of the 'maverick genius' Nikola Tesla, born in Serbia but a US resident for most of his life. Tesla's works, which are still surrounded in mystery to some extent, took off in the 1880s after he was seized by the notion of transmitting electrical power on an industrial scale withouth using wires. His idea was to harness the inmense power of lightning and distribute artificially-made lightning to consumers trhough the air. Doubtful sanity Its at this time that a saying of Robert Frost cmoes to mind, namely that 'A civilized society is one which tolerates eccentricity to the point of doubtful sanity'. In 1899 Tesla's laboratory created a high frecuency AC generator more than 16 metres in diameter that generated 300,000 wats of power and produced artificial lighning bolts 40 meters long. So far, so good, but after this he aimed to supply homoes with what he called 'cosmic energy', electrical forces from the Earth's upper atmosphere that could be collected by special antennas on each roof. His experiments along these lines ceased in 1905, after which he transferred his attention to creating a 'peace ray' that would put and end to war by using 'macroscopic particle beams' that he termed 'teleforce'. - -- Saludos Carlos E.
