[opensuse-support] kfind
I found kfind on the internet, and downloaded it to my reinstalled Tumbleweed. However, I want it on the desktop, and it will only go to the panel, unlike in the past. There does not seem to be a way to change it. I suppose it must be in the directory itself, somewhere. I'd like to find the file in the terminal and find the problem and modify the text, but there seems to be another problem with this version of TW: it doesn't recognize the instruction locate. How can I get this important command back? (This version is 2020-0826) Thanx for your assistance--doug

using the openSUSE Tumbleweed repo, the command: rpm -ql kfind reveals /usr/share/applications/org.kde.kfind.desktop so the following command: cp /usr/share/applications/org.kde.kfind.desktop ~/Desktop should make it appear on your plasma5 desktop so far as Tw not recognizing "locate", do you even have it installed? what command line result did you receive when you tried "locate"? smthg like "cnf locate" ?? did you try: cnf locate which should have told you how to obtain "locate". -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

By installing it, obviously. You try to use it, it should tell you "not found, try 'cnf locate'", and if you do, it will probably tell how to install it. Hint: it is an official package, with an extra letter. As I don't have tumbleweed, and I already have the package installed, I can not show you the output. Go ahead and do it. With all respect, if you do not know how to find/use a repo you are not ready for TW. TW is not really the right thing for beginners. Instead, install Leap 15.2. Then read the Start Up Guide and other available documentation and learn some basic openSUSE before jumping to TW. I have been using TW for over a year. Hopefully there is some documentation for it; if so, where? If there is no start-up guide, then what is there? Can I get the Leap guide without installing it? I want a system that is continuously updated, and always current--that's why TW. And I'm not new to Linux--I used PCLOS for years until they castrated it. I had things working pretty well, but then I had to reinstall the system and some of the things that seemed to work pretty well in the 2019 version seem to be more difficult (or missing) in 2020. Example: I can't find how to stop the screen from going to full size when an app goes to the edge-- the command seems to be missing in the 2020-0826 version. Also, can't find out how to make this Thunderbird single-space. --doug --doug -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

Thanx, Ralph. I found the stuff you mentioned, and it should be a big help. Also, I found on the boot-up screen there is an info box that I have been ignoring--who ever reads the directions?--and I opened it up and found a bunch of stuff, probably including some or all of what you have pointed me to. I looked at the file you recommended and printed out a lot of it. I'll put it all in a losse-leaf for constant reference. This is an absurd question, you are not a novice. You only have to start yast package manager and ask to install kfind and/or locate. You know where to find the books. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.1 x86_64 at Telcontar)

That is so. Possibilities: 1) The package is already installed: cer@Telcontar:~> cnf jstar Program 'jstar' is present in package 'joe', which is installed on your system. Absolute path to 'jstar' is '/usr/bin/jstar'. Please check your $PATH variable to see whether it contains the mentioned path. cer@Telcontar:~> 2) The package is not installed, but it is known in at least one of the configured repos: cer@Telcontar:~> cnf balsa The program 'balsa' can be found in following packages: * balsa [ path: /usr/bin/balsa, repository: zypp (OBS_server_mail) ] * balsa [ path: /usr/bin/balsa, repository: zypp (download.opensuse.org-oss) ] * balsa [ path: /usr/bin/balsa, repository: zypp (download.opensuse.org-oss_1) ] Try installing with: sudo zypper install balsa cer@Telcontar:~> 3) A package or program of that name can not be found in any of the configured repos: cer@Telcontar:~> cnf fido fido: command not found cer@Telcontar:~> So, locate: cer@Telcontar:~> cnf locate Program 'locate' is present in package 'mlocate', which is installed on your system. I don't run TW but generally in openSUSE you can 'find' a 'missing' command using cnf (aka command-not-found), like: 'cnf locate' or 'command-not-found locate'.
