OpenSSH is a recent project developed by the OpenBSD team - www.openbsd.org Their goal was to create a version of SSH that is not burdened by copyright laws. OpenSSH has been adopted for use by the FreeBSD team and also for Debian GNU/Linux. My question is directed to SuSE. Will this be ported for use with SuSE Linux? It apparently has been. The Linux section of the OpenSSH Web page points to http://violet.ibs.com.au/openssh/files/ One of the options there is openssh-1.2pre15-1suse.src.rpm. At a quick first glance, it looks as though you'd need to install the SSLeay libraries to get it to build, but that wouldn't be very difficult. --steve

OpenSSL should work in place of SSLeay, too. -- Drew | "You see this? This is this. http://www.primenet.com/~curb | This ain't something else, curb@primenet.com | this is this!" PGP Public Key on request | -- Michael, _The Deer Hunter_

Thanks! I was in a hurry and flat missed this. I'm not familiar with OpenSSL. Is there a major difference between OpenSSL and SSLeay that would make one preferable over the other for the purpose of porting OpenSSH? --steve

To the best of my knowledge OpenSSL is just the successor of SSLeay, while SSLeay is not actively maintained any more. In terms of the protocol they are identical, but the user interface for the tools has moved forward. It makes sense to use OpenSSL whereever you can.

This RPM is not made by SuSE. But we are also working on it. However, it does not compile cleanly yet... Is there going to be a bind8 RPM available based on 8.2.2-P5 and not 8.2.2-P3? I upgraded this morning, but found that I was upgrading to something with known holes... *sigh* D

No, OpenSSL has many advantages, i.e. support for X509v3 Extensions. OpenSSL handles more formats. BTW: The first Version of OpenSSL (I believe 0.9.1 or something like this) was SSLeay plus some selected patches. The reason was, that there wasn't a maintainer for SSLeay, so a new project team started working :) oki, Steffen -- Dieses Schreiben wurde maschinell erstellt, es trägt daher weder Unterschrift noch Siegel.
