Hi, It is with great regret that we have to announce that Pascal has decided to leave the openSUSE board. Due to changes in Pascal's life he feels he is no longer able to commit the necessary time and energy to the openSUSE project and the openSUSE board. As we all know, Pascal has given a lot of time to the project and the community. He has always been willing to help, teach, and maintain. We thank Pascal very much for his past contributions and wish him all the best. We hope that at some point in the future, life presents another opportunity for Pascal to get re-involved with the project and the community. Pascal, thank you for everything you have contributed to the openSUSE project. The board would like to welcome Richard Brown as its newest member to fill the seat vacated by Pascal. Richard received the 3rd most votes in the recent election, and was endorsed by Pascal as a preferred candidate for the vacated seat. Richard's term will run to the next election. What about packman maintaining? Pascal was the one who knew what is going on with pmbs. He was the first to help. In that days, pmbs worked just fine, without serious problems. But now, pmsb lacks of admin touch - service is often overloaded, the most of packages are ready for 12.3 but they are not uploaded to mirrors due to pmbs config. Stefan Botter was looking on it but still no progress. If something is wrong with pmbs and users want get in touch with admin, then with who? Unfortunately the Board can not comment on what is going on with Packman, as it is completely outside our realm. The best bet is to email their list or ask on their IRC channel.

What do Novell and openSUSE have to do with it? Legally, SUSE/Novell/any company in europe can not have anything to do with Packman. Only universities are allowed to deal with these patent-encumbered stuff.

Jos, Have you ever bothered to look at the list of repositories available to be activated in the Software Management part dealing with Repositories in YaST2? No? Then go ahead and look. If you don't see packman as one of the repositories which can be activated then let me know which version of openSUSE you are using - if you are using openSUSE that is. (If you were trying to state the above as a private message to me so as not to publicly admit what everyone knows to be the case (that packman is a repo shown for activation in openSUSE - but which "Legally, SUSE/Novell/any company in europe can not have anything to do with Packman." - then you shouldn't have sent your reply to this public list. At least Ubuntu has a more "holier than thou" approach to this: they tell you that it is very naughty to have programs which will give you the ability to use multimedia applications BUT if, heavens forbid!, you do want to have multimedia then 'do this' to install those naughty-type programs which, naturally, we (Ubuntu) don't know anything about -- "Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more!".) I feel very little urge to reply constructively when spoken to in to such a tone, even if it wasn't uninformed. So, all you get is a 'have a nice day'. Cheers, Jos

Have you ever bothered to look at the list of repositories available to be activated in the Software Management part dealing with Repositories in YaST2?
Cheers, Jos
I am sorry that you have never had the chance to look at the list of repositories available to be activated in an officially sanctioned release of an openSUSE release and missed the significance of this which led you to write- "What do Novell and openSUSE have to do with it? Legally, SUSE/Novell/any company in europe can not have anything to do with Packman. Only universities are allowed to deal with these patent-encumbered stuff." and am sorry that you took such a negative reaction to be informed of this. But I accept your kind sentiments for me to "'have a nice day'", and which I reciprocate in return. Oh, BTW, if you do look at the list of repositories available to be activated in a release of openSUSE - the 12.3 for example - you will also see a repository called "libdvdcss" - see attached. But what about packman?
Ask packman@links2linux.de
But does your response also means that there is no concern if openSUSE is left with no multimedia support normally provided from packman?

I would consider this to be the most sensible statement which you have ever made on these lists.
