Sounds like you either need to install the proprietary Linux drivers for
your graphics card from the card or chip maker's web site...and/or...
I assume that your monitor is not too dark 100% of the time? If so, try to
adjust the brightness using the monitor's button controls, if the brightness
and contrast controls don't make the thing brighten up when cranked to 100%
then your picture tube has given up and it is time for a new monitor :-(

Thanks for all the great replies...I visisted the packman site and got mplayer running fine...it's playing all my avis nows...thanks a bunch guys.
Now I just gotta figure out how to make the video brighter...it's all too dark. In xp I can advanced desktop settings and adjust to settings for my video card...but as far as I can tell...there's no options like this in suse. I'm still searching through google to come up with something. Turning brightness up mplayer doesn't help at all.
