Will there be a special CJK version of SuSE 8.0
No, but the 'normal' version should be good enough for CJK. At least it should be improved again for CJK compared to all previous versions.
(and will it be available in Japan?)
I don't know, it looks like there are still problems to make it available in Japan. I hope that these problems can be solved, but I don't know for sure.
or is it easier to use the "normal" version and just download all cjk related stuff?
This time, the 'normal' version already contains more CJK related stuff
than any previous 'normal' version of SuSE Linux.
Because we wanted SuSE Linux 8.0 to comform to the LI18NUX2000
specification, see also
http://www.suse.de/~mfabian/suse-cjk/li18nux-test.html
we included basic support for all CJK languages into all SuSE Linux
8.0 CD sets. Even the German edition already contains the Korean XIM
server Ami and the Chinese XIM server xcin this time. For Japanese,
there is even more stuff included than for Korean or Chinese, it may
be already enough for most users. At least some basic stuff is there
for all CJK languages.
It should be easy to download and install additional CJK related
packages from the SuSE ftp server.
There are 3 versions of SuSE Linux 8.0:
- German
- International-1 (USA, France, ...)
- International-2 (Czechia, Hungary, ...)
CJK support is quite good in all of them. But (as usual)
International-2 contains a few more CJK packages (FreeWnn, nicolatter,
jmode, anthy, chasen, kakasi, cjk-latex, cjk-lyx, eb, eblook, xjdic,
gjiten, javadict, kanji-lookup, kanjipad, edict, jtools, nkf, are only
on International-2).
On top of that, International-2 already contains some fixes for Qt3
which are important for CJK which were unfortunately not yet included
in the German and International-1 edition.
I recommend that people interested in CJK using Qt3/KDE3 who have only
the German or International-1 edition update to the improved Qt3
packages available here:
