The cleanup algorithm will then think that the corresponding /etc overlays can be deleted. On next boot the overlay is not found any more, and thus the mount during the initrd will fail. (The snapshots themselves should still be there, it's "just" the overlay which is lost.) The immediate action will be to abort if there's not /.snapshots mount. This does not explain however why /.snapshots wasn't mounted in the first place. Actual Results: After reboot of an updated node it doesn't start any workloads. It looks that it removes all snapshots from the system. On next boot there is no root filesystem anymore. The node is dead. Expected Results: Node is alive after transactional-update, even after several reboots. transactional-update should not do anything if the /.snapshots folder is empty! It should not delete all snapshots!
