[opensuse-kde] Strange KDE 4.6.2 and 11.4 Upgrade Experience
Hi all, I recently upgraded my 11.4 install to 4.6.2 from the default 4.6.0 (?) version using the KDE:Release:46 repos, in addition to performing a "zypper dup" to upgrade my entire system. After the upgrade, kdm wouldn't let me log in. If I try to enter the password of the username created during the first install...it kicks me back to kdm. I had to drop down to the shell and create a new username through YaST. The new username and password now works properly. Why could this be happening? Any ideas? Thanks Anshul -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

What does /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager have set for DEFAULT_WM? I've seen KDM login kick back to KDM too, but several days ago and I don't remember on which system(s) or whether I fixed it. I do remember seeing at least one other mailing list mention of it though. It may be the session type selected needs to be plasma instead of kde. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Hi. The same thing actually hppened to me in the same situation as well. In
my case, choosing "KDE Plasma Desktop" in the "Session Type" menu in KDM fixed
the situation and KDE has worked fine since...

The issue found was the following: An install/update scriptlet modified /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager, and set an invalid "DEFAULT_WM", it was set to "kde4" (false), instead of "startkde" (right). repeat correct entry: DEFAULT_WM="startkde" But none the less there could be other issues also. Patrick, Is there an official way to do the update? I put together a test system and wish to do the upgrade, still too chicken to update my desktop system. Tnx, Mike.

*only* if you call "startx" according to the text within that script, no word about "startkde". I boot to runlevel 3 and then move to runlevel 5, init 5.
Third: Fail!
I don't have "Fail!", but move directly to the password screen where the desired window_manager is selected.
Easy to follow, ne?
Easy but does not folow.

probably would fubar some other situations.

I just did a fresh (minimalist KDE) Factory install. The only dm showing in installed packages is kdm-4.6.2-4.1. Here now in Tumbleweed with 4.6.3, using none of kde-plasma, kde, kde4 or startkde will startx open a KDE4 session. Trying produces this .xsession-errors: http://fm.no-ip.com/Tmp/SUSE/xsession-errors-114T-0startx Only setting it to kde or startkde can I login through the login manager successfully without an existing ~/.dmrc pointing to kde-plasma, or selecting kde plasma as session type. kde4 or kdm just restart the login manager.
First: /usr/bin/kde4 is a bash-script or starting apps in a kde4 env.
Second: the central /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc looks for $DEFAULT_WM in $PATH

So now in 4.6.3, what is working for those who wish startx to work instead of using the login manager and whose only purposely installed window manager is KDE? * permissions.local has last line "/usr/bin/xorg root:root 4711" uncommented, and /usr/bin/Xorg is -rws--x--x. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
