[opensuse-kde] KDE4 configuration questions
Hello SuSE people. Have been playing with 4.2 for several weeks now. Can't find some configuration stuff. Where does one find how to se up the mouse. ( size - pointer- scroll wheel-etc) Where does one find sounds for apps? (change-open -close windows and other events) Bob S -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Both are configurable through the "System Settings" application, "General" tab. Mouse configuration is under "Computer Administration" section, "Keyboard & Mouse" icon, "Mouse" task. Sounds for events are a special class of "notification". Notification configuration is under "Look & Feel" section, "Notifications" icon, "System Notifications" task. Choosing what makes a sound and which sound to play is the "Applications" tab. Choosing what software plays the sound is the "Player Settings" section. When "Use the KDE sound system" is selected, "Phonon" is being used and it has various configurations discussed in the next paragraph. The event you mentioned are from the "The KDE Window Manager" "Event source". "Phonon" is KDE 4's new multimedia framework. It is also configured in the same area under "Computer Administration" section, "Multimedia" icon. Particularly relevant to your question is the output device for "notifications" which is selected on the "Device Preference" tab by choosing "Audio Output -> Notifications" from the tree view and rearranging the devices displayed in the "Output Device Preference for the 'Notifications' Category" pane using the "Prefer" and "Defer" buttons beneath said pane. Excuse me sir, and thank you for replying. I have yet to be able to find the elusive "System settings" in either the old classic menu or the new "Kickoff" menu, or by right clicking on the desktop. I guess I need some very basic guidance here. Seems as though 4.2 is not very intuitive to me, at least. Either that or I just don't have it for some reason. Running 11.1 and KDE4.2 Bob S Thanks again -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Alt-F2 to open Run Command window. Type in "systemsettings" (no quotes), press Enter and in few moments you will have said System Settings. It is Desktop Configuration or Configure Desktop in Kickoff (Main Menu). Tab General is first that is opened. In first row you can see Notifications icon, click it and in new frame select application from menu Event Source and then you change notifications. In a forth row you can see Keyboard&Mouse icon. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

I'm sorry, I was writing my description from a Debian system since it is *mostly* the same. "System Settings" is the name of the application used by upstream and Debian. In openSuse, the name appears to be "Configure Desktop" or "Personal Settings". I'm using the "Application Launcher" widget. (The widget looks like a green geeko in a circular frame.) "Configure Desktop" appears on my "Favorites" tab, my "Recently Used" tab, and at the very bottom of the "Applications" tab. If you have further difficulty locating the configuration, make sure you have the systemsettings binary. On my system it is from the package kdebase4-workspace-4.2.1-214.5. You should be able to run it directly, even if it doesn't appear on your menus, by pressing Alt+F2 and then typing "systemsettings" in the text box that appears and then pressing Enter or Return keys on your keyboard. -- Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. ,= ,-_-. =. bss@iguanasuicide.net ((_/)o o(\_)) ICQ: 514984 YM/AIM: DaTwinkDaddy `-'(. .)`-' http://iguanasuicide.net/ \_/
