[opensuse-kde] KDE & NVidia login problems: any advice?
Hi all, I just rebuilt a machine which has been happily running SuSE 11.4 and various versions of the NVidia proprietary drivers. Running with the version of KDE installed by default from the distro DVD (4.6.0?), I can no longer log in. The progress bar gets to about 80% and then just sits there. If I leave it long enough, the screen saver cuts in, and them when reawakened, I get a black screen with the cursor, and the cursor responds to mouse moves, but nothing else. I've tried other versions of KDE, right up to Trunk, but no change. I've also tried different versions of the NVidia driver (260, 270, 275), but none let me log in. I can log into ICEWM just fine. The annoying thing is that the machine hardware is the same except that I added another SATA disk, and this all worked just fine before. I've done complete reformat & reinstall...no help. I've tried a fresh user in case kde config files are wrong....no change. Login does work with the Nouveau driver, but that's so unstable, it's not usable yet. Anyone any ideas/advice? First thing that comes to mind is the "wrong" KDE session type is selected. Go to the KDM login screen and check the session type. Make sure it's set to KDE Plasma Desktop. Regards,
Paul This is a bug in nvidia driver. The proprietary nvidia driver is never useable after opensue 11.4 install.
But you can manuell fix it. Use Key Shift+ALt+F12 to disable Effects when progress bar stands by 80%. Then go to Systemsettings/Effects and tab advanced. Her you must disable direct rendering and set composite-type to OpenGl. Then klick button execute. Now you can enable the effects. eRiC -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

You are presumably being bitten by this bug: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=160115 Affects a few older NVidia GPUs when using the latest driver. You can check by temporarily turning off compositing in the X server, e.g. by creating a file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-extensions.conf containing Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "off" EndSection If that fixes the freezing, you should stick with the older driver version 260.19.44 for the time being until NVidia gets this fixed. Hi. Once i added a NV8600GT to my box with nvidia proprietary driver and had the same problem with you. i logged in a icewm session then removed all kwin* and plasma* in ~/.kde4/share/config after that i was able to login a KDE session. hope it may help! sorry for my bad english... Hi, Thanks for taking the time to reply - and your English is superb! I tried deleting those files, and even all of ~/.kde4, and even making a new user ID just for testing, so KDE would create the new .kde files in ~, but I always get this hang. It's really frustrating, as this machine has been working with this NVidia / KDE combination for a long time. Further, the laptop I'm writing this email on is running KDE 4.6.4 and NVidia 270.41.06 quite happily...? I just don't understand what's going on. Did you try the "failsafe KDE/Plasma" session under "Session Type" at KDM (the kde login-screen). Or else try manually editing ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc to disable compositing. Usually these kinds of X issues are related to (some) desktop effect(s). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Yes, I did try the failsafe session - same problem :-( If I start with a new user, does KDE automatically enable compositing? I tried with no ~/.kde4 files at all, and still the same issue. I'll try editing kwinrc and report back. Thanks to all for trying to help. Yes, it does, if it thinks compositing should be supported and working on the system - and it should when using the nvidia blob. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Does it help to remove the /etc/X11/xorg.conf? (or better move the file from /etc/X11/xorg.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bkup) -- Richard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
Hi all, I've narrowed it down: The file ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc contains a line OpenGLIsUnsafe=false by default, even for a newly created user. Changing false to true avoids the problem, and I can now log in, but of course, effects are now disabled. So, something is wrong with OpenGL, as suggested by you guys (Thanks!). What I now have to figure out is what changed with OpenGL - the machine hardware hasn't changed, with the exception of the adding of an extra SATA hard drive; the software is a new install of 11.4 with all updates, and I've tried various versions of the NVidia drivers - all with the same problem. I know that this is now likely to be an OpenGL or NVidia issue, but I have no idea where to start researching this. Any clues would be appreciated, and I also realise that it will not be an issue for this list any more, so once again, thanks to everyone for suggestions. Did you mix the repo binary driver and your self-compiled ones? Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

No, I didn't. I only use the self-compiled downloads from NVidia. Is there a reason you asked? P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Some people forget to remove the other driver before they install a new one and that leads to problems. Did you try the driver from the repo (after removing the self-compiled one)? And you can check whether you have a xorg.conf, 11.4 should not have one and if there is a left-over it could also cause trouble. Sven Hi Sven,
No, I didn't have the repo driver installed - I used the NVidia download only. I do have an xorg.conf - immediately after a clean (reformat) install - as well as xorg.conf.d. The NVidia installer may have created it, but I thought that if the xorg.conf file was present, it overrides the directory? I think the NVidia installer uses the file anyway. You recommend using OpenGL, but in his case OpenGL is not working. Why he has a problem with OpenGL is another question, and that is why Sven was asking about packages. My file ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc also contains a line
with OpenGLIsUnsafe=false But the effects going well after i disable direct rendering and set Composite-Typ to OpenGL in KDE system settings. Hi all, Firstly, thanks very much to all who helped - much appreciated :-) I can report that the problem is fixed, but not in an expected way...... It was definitely something to do with Open GL, but what I may never know. I tried multiple versions of the NVidia drivers and nothing made any difference. Eventually, I swapped the graphics adapter for another NVidia card, and effects worked perfectly, with no software changes at all. Thinking it might be a hardware issue on the original card, I swapped it back in......and it also worked perfectly, and still is!! All problems gone as mysteriously as they first appeared. Go Figure! Anyway, thanks again to all who pitched in. Regards to the list. Paul -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

No, I use the nvidia driver from the repo and there is no xorg.conf. AFAIR the installer explicitely asks whether to create/modify it, so it is not a clean install that creates it and the nvidia driver does not need it either.
