Recompiling Kernel?
Is it a good idea to recompile my kernel after the installation and everything is running great? Iam trying to get ride of some annoying kernel errors as well as speed up the boot process. Any suggestions? daniel

As long as everything is running there is no need to recompile. The speed up for booting is minimal (you will achieve more checking for unneeded services). The speed up at run time is mostly said to be between 5 and 10 percent, I would guess in most cases around 5% which you will not really feel. What kernel errors are you talking about? You should probably work on these. And if you recompile because of these you can check out some other things (removing unneeded modules...) Chris

This is really rather offtopic for this group, but I'll go for it anyway. I have had problems when compiling recent SuSE kernels, I usually get compile errors - mostly in the emulation-of-other-binaries area. Since the SuSE kernels work quite well anyway, I am not sure it is worth it. Standard (unmodified by SuSE) kernels are easier to compile, but you will be missing things like the alsa sound modules unless you apply all of the patches. Bottom line is: I recompile on the servers at work because I want complete control over what is there, I leave desktop machines alone nowadays. -- opinions personal, facts suspect. http://home.arcor.de/36bit/samba.html
