I think you need to look for other explanations, starting with your Qt version - you should use Qt 4.4.3, I suspect you may be using Qt 4.5rc.
I'm using Qt 4.4.3, not 4.5rc. I was actually considering to use Qt 4.5rc to fix the issue but did not yet have the time and audacity to do so. How do i change the "desktop activity" that i'm using?
This behaviour (no right click, no widget borders) is caused by the configured plasma desktop plugin not loading. We did not port this for the initial 4.2.0 packages, but it is now present. Perhaps you still have the older ones installed?
Does ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc contain plugin=plaindesktop?
Here's my plasma-appletsrc file in its entirety:
[Containments][1] activity= desktop=0 formfactor=0 geometry=0,0,1024,768 immutability=1 location=0 plugin= screen=0 wallpaperplugin=image wallpaperpluginmode=SingleImage zvalue=0
I was able to resolve this problem. Updating to KDE 4.2.1 was the first step (which i would have performed anyway since i like to work with the latest & greatest KDE). This did not change the behavior, i.e. still no RMB, still no widget borders or anything. I then verified that the file plasma_containment_plaindesktop.so now is indeed installed (i did not check this with the update of March 3rd, but anyway, now the file is there). I then noticed that the file plasma-appletsrc contains a suspicious line, namely "plugin=" (see quoted text above, with no plugin mentioned). I changed this to read instead "plugin=plaindesktop". Logged out and logged back in again and - voilà! - there's my cashew again and i see the RMB context menu. Credit is due to Will for giving me the pointers to the right configuration file and to the location where the plasma plugins are to be installed! I have no idea how the configuration file got messed up in the first place. Maybe some rogue update conversion or whatnot.
