That's exactly what I've seen, so I had expected it to be the same problem. I think the problem is the missing RENDER extension. As far as I understood (I didn't really find a good description on the net), this extension simplifies the use of fonts and other pixmaps for X-applications, and many applications need it nowadays. Unfortunaely, KDE and also GNOME seem to need the extension, and - as part of KDE - also KDM. I would try to make the login screen as simple as possible, i.e. - disable anti-aliasing - be sure to use fonts that your Xserver knows of - use a simple GUI theme - don't use a background picture (no idea if this will help at all) And when it works, you can slowly turn back on one feature after the other...
