[opensuse-factory] 10.2 A4 report
Installed 10.2 Alpha4 on a old laptop with the following problems: 1. USB mouse went haywire during install, used touchpad instead. 2. During package selection the screen stayed at 800x600 resolution even though I selected 1024x768 for the install res. 3. The Linksys wireless card is now recognised even though I needed to download a firware package from Ubuntu as one was not available from openSUSE that I could find. I do have the following error though: SoftMAC: Start scanning with channel: 1 SoftMAC: Scanning 14 channels SoftMAC: Scanning finished ieee80211_crypt_tkip: module not supported by Novell, setting U taint flag. ieee80211_crypt: registered algorithm 'TKIP' bcm43xx: set security called, .level = 2, .enabled = 1, .encrypt = 1 ieee80211_crypt_ccmp: module not supported by Novell, setting U taint flag. ieee80211_crypt: registered algorithm 'CCMP' bcm43xx: set security called, .level = 4, .enabled = 1, .encrypt = 1 bcm43xx: set security called, .level = 2, .enabled = 1, .encrypt = 1 bcm43xx: set security called, .level = 4, .enabled = 1, .encrypt = 1 ip_tables: (C) 2000-2006 Netfilter Core Team bcm43xx: Radio turned off bcm43xx: DMA 0x0200 (RX) max used slots: 1/64 bcm43xx: DMA 0x0260 (TX) max used slots: 0/512 bcm43xx: DMA 0x0240 (TX) max used slots: 0/512 bcm43xx: DMA 0x0220 (TX) max used slots: 1/512 bcm43xx: DMA 0x0200 (TX) max used slots: 0/512 bcm43xx: PHY connected bcm43xx: Radio turned on bcm43xx: Chip initialized bcm43xx: DMA initialized bcm43xx: 80211 cores initialized bcm43xx: Keys cleared SoftMAC: Associate: Scanning for networks first. As you can see the radio is turned on and I can scan for and see my wireless network using kwifimanager but the signal strength (0) reported is too poor for a connection. A scan using KWiFiManager shows the correct SSID, Mode:Managed (correct), Quality: 100, WEP: on (correct). Not sure how I should report this as it worked correctly under 10.1 using ndiswrapper. The radio strength on the Linksys wrt54g router is turned up to a higher value as well. Not sure where to report the network problem. Also the onboard eth controller is working fine. Using kinternet I _was_ able to initiate a wireless connection that KWiFiManager confirms. Seems strange that KWiFiManager couldn't do that. Will report as a bug. If anyone else is in need of the firmware for the WRT54G pcmcia wireless card let me know and I will send it off list. Mmh - could y ou file a bug for this so that we can investigate and possibly ship the firmware as well? Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj/ SUSE Linux Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

Correction: the graphics selection window stayed at 800x600 not the screen.

I too am an unfortunate bcm wlan owner hoping that 10.2 will help me get rid of the nasty destabilizing Ndiswrapper without buying a new card. My card doesn't work out of the box on alpha4 - it's recognized correctly by yast, NM doesn't see it. Haven't tried the firmware yet. Here are some links Driver site: http://bcm43xx.berlios.de/ Ubuntu doc on howto obtain firmware: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx/Dapper#head-91813a... Don't know the licensing issues for it - but seems Ubuntu can host a firmware package on their Universe repo.. Will be great if we can get this sorted out. The driver is part of 2.6.18, so we have it.

So, could either of you file a bugreport, please?
Will be great if we can get this sorted out.

Installed alpha 4 on my second harddrive. First I learned that the DVD made by makeSUSEdvd again produces a "couldn't initialize catalogues" error when I tried to install with it. So I fell back to the 5 CDs which worked quite well, except (of course) that the USB Mouse went mad - installing by keyboard gave me really a hard time. I had also a new problem with my LCD and unsupported display modes provides by Sax2. In 10.1 I had no problem with this and now the only setting which works is 1024x786@60. Running 10.1 sax2 shows a PTS PROVIEW Monitor 1280x1024@75 (30-80kHz, 50-75Hz), but I'll investigate in this. I also recognized that openSUSE wants to delete my root AND also my home partition, when doing a fresh install. It would be better to have a detection that asks if one wants to keep the home partition. Personally I always update SUSE by installing in root and keeping all my data on /home. As a new feature I would like that the alpha/beta versions won't change my default grub bootscreen, 'cause I really want to keep my 10.1 bootscreen. So far, alpha 4 works impressively well for an alpha and I really like the new KDE menu. Kind greetings, have a happy openSUSE time, Tom. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
