[opensuse-factory] Missing login sound for the GNOME desktop
Hi! The login sound for the Gnome desktop that is enabled at "Startup Applications" [gnome-control-centre] executes this command:- /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="desktop-login" --description="GNOME Login" However there is no file with this id, and executing this command on the terminal simply gives Failed to play sound: File or data not found The correct command, that plays a login sound correctly, should be /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="login" --description="GNOME Login" If the intention is to disable the login sound for Gnome [which is quite alright I think], this should be done by disabling this auto-startup command instead of having a wrong id for canberra-gtk-play. It's just this way because the theme we ship (which is the upstream freedesktop.org sound theme) has no login sound. We do not wish to disable the login sound (unless the login sound is horrible for some reason, which was the reason the old one was removed upstream -- it was way too long). (For GNOME stuff, it might be better to ask on opensuse-gnome, btw ;-)) Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Gah, forgot to reply to this part of the mail. Sorry. The sound naming spec [1] says it's desktop-login and doesn't mention any "login" sound. I understand. However there is this file "/usr/share/sounds/login.wav" though, which is not too bad a sound for the login in my opinion. Perhaps there is some way this could be used to setup a link called desktop-login in the default sound theme [freedesktop] directory? Otherwise it makes little sense of having this in the startup options, when most people bothering to check these startup applications would think this is a bug. -- Atri -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

This file comes from gnome-audio, which should not be installed by default anymore.

I'm really all for a login sound as long as it's good. It's too late for 11.3 to change this, but if someone files a bug with a good sound (I'm not a big fan of the login.wav above, but it's okayish, I guess), then we'll have it for the next openSUSE version. OK, will have to start fishing for good login sound for 11.4/12.0 :) -- Atri -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Sorry for my brute intervention! I admire both of you Atri/Vincent as user/developer counterparts good examples. I wonder comment that, beginning, I believe from 11.1, something get broken, or at least not perfectly running among startup apps in Gnome and the behaviour of such things, which are expected to auto-start at login, are not working at all. One of these is exactly login-sound, which I had to hack in order to hear a sound at login. Apparently (especially to me) it seems Gnome be a very complex environment so any eventual adjustments, are in most of cases out of the skill of the common user and this should make reflect openSUSE on. Do you have any other example than the login sound?
One of these is exactly login-sound, which I had to hack in order to hear a sound at login.
Really, you don't need to hack it: just add a login-sound sound to the sound theme :-)

Such changes should indeed not be done by users but at the distribution level. The thing is that we have many issues to deal with (some that are unfortunately more important since they are actually blocking people from using their computer). However, what we try to do is to help people do the change in the distribution. I know I don't have time to look for a good login sound, but I'm willing to give instructions on what needs to be done to get a good sound in. That includes telling you which package should be changed, how to do the change, how to submit in the build service, etc. Yes, it might seem hard if you're not guided, but we (developers) are willing to guide people who want to see specific bugs fixed :-) And you'll see that once you know where to look, it's not that hard! Do you have any other example than the login sound? Stating from my old post on similar thread: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2009-11/msg02236.html I think it was a problem onto all the Gnome defaulting auto-start apps.
One of these is exactly login-sound, which I had to hack in order to hear a sound at login.

I would like to clarify that here I am refering to 11.2 login-sound, not 11.3. So why upgrading 11.1 to 11.2 could drove to such issues?

I understand the above points Vincent but IMO, perhaps, beside the "severe issues resolver team" should be desirable to have also a "not blocking issues resolver team"

I am not criticizing the current login sound but further the total lack of it at login. I will be very happy to learn something about package correction/submission; the problem is that I have not many time to dedicate, but this doesn't means that I wont disregard this possibility.
