[opensuse-factory] Re: TW
I tried a new install of TW yesterday on a Thinkpad T61 with 4G memory replacing a windows 10 install. I tried the 11/16 DVD and Network installs and neither worked. Since neither of them worked I tried the 20180613 DVD. Didn't work. The install of all the above seems to work normally until the selection for the type of install: KDE, GNOME, server, etc. At that point the hd spins a bit and then all comes to an abrupt end -- the system hangs. Is this a known issue that will be resolved soon? Certainly does not provide a good user experience for someone looking at TW as an option. Thanks for any info. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I downloaded the DVD and burned with K3b. When the DVD install failed I downloaded the Network install and burned same. When that failed I burned the 6/13 to DVD with K3b. I guess if the media is defective it might be a K3b issue? I did rewrite the DVD. Perhaps I'll try on a new DVD and see if it works. My K3b does not have a "write image" option. On the Tools menu I have options 1) Copy medium, 2) Format/Erase rewritable disk, 3) Burn image; after that three options to rip audio and video. Additionally, using the "burned" iso image it works up to the point of having chosen the install type so I think the system is working ok from the burned image ( which is the way I've always done installs in the past). It just stops working at the same place every time so far -- even on 3 differenct media (one for the 11/16, 6/13 and Network) -- however, the 3 media were created on the same device so I'm changing devices to see if that has any effect. Interesting development.... I tried to copy the image file to a 16GB thumb drive (empty). At about the 98% mark the copy operation stalled for no apparent reason -- just sitting there with the "Notifications" icon spinning but no copying happening. I'll next see if the Network install image will copy to the thumb drive. On Mon, Nov 19, 2018 at 8:52 AM Chuck Davis <cjgunzel@gmail.com> wrote:

What did you use, imagewriter? Notice that it does not matter if the thumb is originally empty or not: anything it might had is destroyed. It is not a normal file copy, it is an image raw copy. There is a full wiki page at our site explaining how to do this copy to usb stick.

The raw copy process might stall at the end, because the kernel may cache several gigabytes in advance that have to be actually written at the end, with the appearance of stalling. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. It is "3". On the CD boot menu there should be an option to verify the CD/DVD. Try that.

If you have an USB stick around, use the "imagewriter" program to write a net install iso to the stick, so you can easily try multiple images!

Definitely not. You burn the ISO to a DVD, where you should use 'Burn image'. Or use a USB stick ( at least 8 GB for the DVD image ) and use Rufus Etcher dd to write the image to USB stick. FWIW I used the image to perform an install today and did not see any of the issues you mention. FWIW2 did you check the md5sum of the downloaded image ?
At this point I'm quite sure there is a problem not with the media but the install program.

Turns out that while the hd had oodles of room I had to shrink the windows partitions before the install could happen. Seems like it would be a good idea to get thru the partitioner before selecting the intstall type so that we can blow away the windows partitions before the install progresses to needing more hd space. Anyway, the install is progressing normally at this point. Thanks for all the ideas mentioned but turns out to be operator error I guess.
