[opensuse-factory] gst-fluendo-mp3 removed from NonOss
Hi, Unfortunately Fluendo asked us to stop distributing mp3 plugin with openSUSE > 11.1. So I had to remove it frrom NonFree and you will see it disappearing in the repo soon - just so you know. OK, but could we know please more details ? 1. Is destributing MP3 addon for free legal ? (I think not) 2. But Fluendo could do that 3. So Why is Fluendo removing support? -- -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov", 29.4.2009 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

That's a real pity.... but unfortunately their good right. Do you know if Fluendo themself will continue distributing the codec? Dominiqu -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

OK, so several questions need to be asked at this news: *What were the terms that we were distributing Fluendo's MP3 plugin with? According to Fluendo's website[1], the package itself is a redistribution contract allowing the distribution of the package in the distro (now I'm sure there is a clause that allows Fluendo to kill the contract at any time, but just wondering). *Have they done this to any other distros, or is it just openSUSE? I'm looking around to other distros websites and mailinglists to see, but if it's just us then perhaps we've violated the contract or something. Did they say anything that can be told to us as to the reason? *Is there a possibility they plan on charging for this in the future, thus the asking to be pulled out of distros? I see it's still available for download from the website. Either way, MP3 playback is pretty much essential IMHO to most people, including myself, so it's a good idea to see what at all we can do to make sure we provide this service to our users, even if it means only offering MP3 playback to those who purchase a copy of openSUSE (to cover a possible license fee). Personally I don't see it as a very big problem. Sure, mp3 playback is critical to most desktop users, but who can get by with _only_ mp3 (and free codecs)? ... so pretty much all users need to get codecs from packman or similar places regardless of fluendo being included or not. If you take the legal issues in some countries seriously, I guess RealPlayer 11 is your best option - should support mp3 and windows media at least afaik. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

It would be great if you'd stop speculating. I just wanted to avoid any suprises if someone notices the package is removed. I don't have any other information at this point, but speculating won't help _at all_.
