[opensuse-factory] Plymouth Integration
Hi Factory users, It seems that we are getting closer and closer to a new boot experience. We have resolved the tty issue and are now running Plymouth and the Graphical session on tty7, keeping the same user experience as before plymouth. The plymouth package has been submitted to Factory in order to get the necessary legal and source review. If you would like to help us testing the package and the integration with other packages, then now is the time to do so. Instructions for installation, etc can be found on the following wiki-page: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Plymouth I also would like to thank Jeff Mahony and Christian Rodriguez for their work on the plymouth packages. They created the foundation on which I continued. Regards Raymond -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

You are correct, however this repo is not offering the adjusted KDM package. But for the rest the files are identical and can be used on 12.1 Regards Raymond -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Disregard the remark about KDM in my previous email. As that KR48 contains the same packages as in KDF and in Factory, KDM from my repo is also usable :-) Regards Raymond -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Hi Patrick,

kdm-4.7.2-6.4.1.x86_64
Ok, standard KDM does not support Plymouth and therefore you have now that Plymouth remains active on vt7 and KDM is pushed to take vt8. Which openSUSE version are you running ? You could try to see if you could only upgrade KDM from my repo and ignore the dependency errors. That would give you KDM 4.8 with plymouth support. Hi Patrick,
12.2-factory, and up-to-date atm
If you have an up-to-date factory system, then your KDM should have version 4.8.0-1.1-... and not 4.7.2. Unless you are using KR47 as KDE repo.
you are saying I should: zypper -v dup --from home_tittiatcoke ??
Don't run that zypper. This would overwrite also your kdebase4-workspace packages and if you are indeed using KR47, this could have quite some consequences. What I was proposing is that you could try to use ONLY the KDM package from my repository. Don't install any other KDE packages from there, but see if you get a working whole if you ignore the dependencies issues that pops up when you try to install KDM. Ok, this can be correct. KDM will only start in runlevel 5 and KDM is taking care of stopping Plymouth. I have to check with Frederic Crozat to see if I can put something specific for rl3. But why are you booting into rl3 and not in multi-user or rl5 ?

I guess habit more than anything. I nearly always do that on test machines as it is easier to check running process, etc, and correct before starting graphics, ie: in factory booting to rl 3 does not start postfix and I have experienced the same in 12.1-tumbleweed. Postfix does start when moving to rl 5.

Something (?) has changed. Now hot/cold/3/5 make no difference, X starts always in vt7, postfix is starting in rl3, and zypper ps shows nothing. The only thing I see is that a boot to rl 3 does not give you a log-in prompt and leaves the screen at tty7. But an <enter> provides the log-in prompt and puts you in tty1. good job. I get something similar. I see my motherboard's POST test info, and then the standard openSUSE Grub menu. I let it take the default and then I see a text screen showing me bits that are loading for a while, then the upstream KDE loading screen until KDE finishes loading. I haven't had time to rework the Plymouth install to see if I missed a bit (I did follow the Wiki instructions except instead of using Factory I used the 12.1 repo... After double checking again it seems that these proprietary drivers would require the vga=xxxx kernel option. This as they do not offer KMS support. I have updated the wiki with this information and I would appreciate it if you could test it again with the vga=xxxx (with the correct number for your display) and let us know the result. Hi Roman,
Plymouth failed. No graphics. Just text showing the initial start of the boot process. Then a blinking cursor moved to the top left corner of the screen.
The screen stayed black until the upstream kdm theme appeared.
After double checking again it seems that these proprietary drivers would require the vga=xxxx kernel option. This as they do not offer KMS support. I have updated the wiki with this information and I would appreciate it if you could test it again with the vga=xxxx (with the correct number for your display) and let us know the result.
Thanks

Follow up The lib search should be checking /usr/lib64/plymouth for space-flares.so instead of /usr/lib/plymouth. Did you get Plymouth working on a x86 machine? I'm testing on an x86_64 machine. -- Cheers! Roman -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
Hi Roman,
Additional rpm output: /usr/lib/plymouth/space-flares.so does not exist
It seemed that an environment variable was set to the wrong directory. This should be corrected now and would be available with a new build.
cp: accessing `./usr/bin/plymouth': Not a directory cp: cannot create regular file `./usr/sbin/plymouthd': No such file or directory cp: accessing `./usr/bin/plymouth': Not a directory cp: cannot create regular file `./usr/sbin/plymouthd': No such file or directory
This is however a different error and is not related to plymouth. This was already reported on the mailinglist before with sed generating the issue. Robert Schweikert replied last Thursday with a work-around : Edit /lib/mkinitrd/scripts/setup-prepare.sh and on line 156 add ,usr/bin,usr/sbin into the {} Also see https://gitorious.org/opensuse/mkinitrd/merge_requests/5 sed moved to /usr/bin and since the directory is not yet created your initrd has /usr/bin file that is actually sed rather than having /usr/bin/sed Regards Raymond -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

sed moved to /usr/bin and since the directory is not yet created your initrd has /usr/bin file that is actually sed rather than having /usr/bin/sed

Hi Roman,
Could this be why we are not seeing Plymouth?
For you this could be indeed the case, however it still remains that when using proprietary video drivers the vga parameter should be indicated on the kernel options line in grub. So far you are the only one who reported this issue with Plymouth, so I am not sure who the we is that you are indicating. Is your set up with Plymouth working? And is it 32-bit? -- Cheers! Roman -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
Dear Roman,
Is your set up with Plymouth working? And is it 32-bit?
Every bit of Plymouth is being tested on my system and I am using it as a reference to sort out issues with systemd, suspend, etc. The only thing that I do not have is encrypted disks. I am running the 64-bit version of Factory with KDE compiled from git. Raymond, Sorry for jacking the thread, but would it somehow be possible to test plymouth on 12.1 ? The last snapshot of Factory has a few issues with my BIOS during the boot loader install. NM 2012/2/18 Raymond Wooninck <tittiatcoke@gmail.com>:
Hi Factory users,
It seems that we are getting closer and closer to a new boot experience.
Instructions for installation, etc can be found on the following wiki-page:
http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Plymouth
I also would like to thank Jeff Mahony and Christian Rodriguez for their work on the plymouth packages. They created the foundation on which I continued.

Hi Nelson, No problem :-) In my home repo I am also building plymouth packages for 12.1 based on the KR48 or KDF. If you are using Gnome, then either one should do :-) The other repo's are : http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/tittiatcoke/KDE_Release_48_o... or http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/tittiatcoke/KDE_Distro_Facto... Nice, gonna give it a go now. Did you documented this somewhere besides the mailing lists? Yes, I will be using GDM with it. By the way thanks for picking plymouth up, for me it does bring a lot of value to openSUSE and I believe that for a good part of the people out there it will as well. NM
