[opensuse-factory] Desura gaming platform to go opensource with GPL
www.desura.com They are considering going open source with their client, and it looks extremely likely they will. This could be an opportunity to push OBS and if we act fast we could take advantage of being the first distro to offer it in a repo in RPM format. Maybe some useful code too. -- Roger Luedecke openSUSE Ambassador Ind. OK, so how do we do this? Who approaches the Desura guys as an openSUSE Community rep and explains the OBS... how it's a huge advantage for them etc etc... and how do we position openSUSE as the first distro with full repository support for Desura? If we say, leave it to them.. it may never happen. If we get together on this, we can maybe make something interesting happen. I think it'd be great if we were the first to partner with Desura for distribution...Desura has the potential for be a real driving factor for Linux adoption. C. Agreed. Though so far the games I have DL'd don't work... but, thats what bug- reports are for. Well, I am an ambassador so I can approach them. Of course I could have done that anyway... but wanted the feedback of the devs and other code-ninjas. -- Roger Luedecke openSUSE Ambassador Ind. Interesting. I've had no problem with the 2 or 3 games I've had time to test so far. One I was playing until way too late last night was TripleA (a Risk-like game) that I'd never seen before stumbling on it in my Desura Linux client. Worked first try. No pain, no special effort.. was click install and play. I'm not a code-ninja or developer, just a user who makes noise on the mailing list here, but I can try and help out. I don't have a "lot" of time, but I'm willing to step up and do what I can to help this idea turn into a reality. Please dont cross post and this is off topic for a -factory list, take it to the -project or -marketing(where it has been posted). On Tue, Nov 22, 2011 at 1:57 PM, C <smaug42@opensuse.org> wrote:

So what does this do? At the risk of one more mail to Factory about this.... Basically, it's a competitor for Steam - a digital game distribution service - but it includes a much-in-demand Linux version. In some respects you could look at it as yet another package manager, but... it's not distro specific like say an openSUSE repo or an Ubuntu repo. So a game distributor/developer can potentially use Desura to distribute (and sell) their Windows/Linux game without bothering with or worrying about msi, exe, deb, rpm etc. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

C. Right, and this could be just the sort of thing to help build up support for Linux gaming and help dual-booters with their "Wintendos" finally delete their Win partitions. Since Desura has management of the programs in it, it helps against the sloppiness of installing tarballs or from source... which is rather akin to package management. But it addresses many issues I have had with Linux games that we don't carry in repo, or that are commercial. -- Roger Luedecke openSUSE Ambassador Ind.
