[opensuse-factory] Kernel sources for NVIDIA compilation
Hi, I think that I read somewhere that the full install of the kernel sources is not necessary any more to compile the NVIDIA driver but I can't find the information how to do it now on the internet. What needs to be installed now? How to "configure" the sources then? Hi,

You need kernel-flavor-devel package, ie kernel-desktop-devel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Only if you want to use the NVIDIA-Linux-xxxx.run package. A "kernel" module (nvidia.ko) needs to be built, so the kernel source is required and configured with "make cloneconfig && make prepare", then "sh NV*.run". I did this, and the NV*.run worked, but then I had problem with "sax2 -m
0=nvidia"
The file /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so is present on the
system.

The kernel module is nvidia.ko. If there is an error building it, there will be info in /var/log/nvidia-installer.log as well as an error that is thrown up pointing to the log file when trying to build the kernel module. When successfully built and installed, it lives at /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko "modprobe nvidia" should also throw an error if the module is successfully built and installed but has undefined symbol errors. Check the logfile for details of what went wrong. As kernel changes have happened not too far back, the 71.86.11 driver may not be compatible, you can register and post via the very helpful http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=14 Give details of your kernel version and attach the log. Karl needs 71.86.x since he's still using a GeForce2 Ti card. Obviously the latest available release 71.86.11 of the 71.86.x series released on 2009-06-27 is still lacking support for xorg-server 1.6. A "kernel" module (nvidia.ko) needs to be built, so the kernel source is required and configured with "make cloneconfig && make prepare", then "sh NV*.run". This has to be done in runlevel 3, i.e X not running.
I did this, and the NV*.run worked, but then I had problem with "sax2 -m 0=nvidia"
The file /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so is present on the system.
Is the nvidia module loaded? # lsmod|grep nvidia nvidia 9604746 32 i2c_core 23798 13 i2c_dev,dvb_pll,mt352,cx88_vp3054_i2c,cx8800,cx88xx,v4l2_common,nvidia,i2c_algo_bit,tveeprom,videodev,i2c_nforce2,w83791d Regards Sid.

Karl needs 71.86.x since he's still using a GeForce2 Ti card. Obviously the latest available release 71.86.11 of the 71.86.x series released on 2009-06-27 is still lacking support for xorg-server 1.6. Nope. ;) The packages are set up the way they're supposed to be, modulo bnc#437068. Prior to the existence of kernel-$flavor-devel, we had per-architecture kernel-source packages that were nearly identical. A giant waste of space on the mirrors. What I did with kernel-$flavor-devel is to take the files that were arch specific from kernel-source and put them in their own package. Then kernel-source was made noarch and only contains the patched source tree and nothing more. -Jeff -- Jeff Mahoney SUSE Labs -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Yes. It is either kernel devel package, or kernel source, not both. To be sure that is bug please post devel package version, and repo where you found it, if it is not Factory. No, it's not a bug. kernel-$flavor-devel is *not* supposed to be a pared down version of kernel-source. It's only meant to contain the per-flavor specific headers and scripts after running make prepare, the compressed ELF kernel (where applicable), and the symsets. The reason for this was to make kernel-source noarch. bnc 437068 is the enhancement request for a kernel-devel package. Michal Marek is working on it, but I'm sure we can agree that there are more urgent issues with the Factory kernel than wasting disk space with kernel-source for building external modules. -Jeff -- Jeff Mahoney SUSE Labs -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
