[opensuse-factory] Switching default fonts to Source * Pro
Hi, Originally suggested 3 or so years ago by Richard Brown on this list, and rejected with huge backlash (but who am I to ignore controversial topics). Default fonts are a part of distribution's identity and to some degree help to show off beauty of the desktop. Our website branding is based on those in particular, so it would be nice to follow that up with desktop part. I have been using Source Sans Pro for a long time on the desktop, and Source Code Pro in terminal. They work very well in those usecases, even though I'm using smaller than usual font size in both scenarios (I am not using serif fonts enough to judge that part, it just never comes up). I would love to see Gnome desktop also following that trend, as it's using Cantarell, despite YaST-Fonts and other default font utilities. Also I am already sorry to openQA guys, I just cannot stop suggesting changes that break tests :/ Speaking of controversial and fonts, how about default subpixel rendering set on lcddefault and slight hinting? There are some pretty cool examples from freetype folks about that stuff [1, 2]. I would love to see cleaner and better looking fonts in openSUSE ;) LCP [Stasiek] https://lcp.world [1] https://freetype.org/freetype2/docs/subpixel-hinting.html [2] https://freetype.org/freetype2/docs/text-rendering-general.html#the-default-... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Do you also think other DEs like KDE Plasma and Xfce should be changed to use Source * Pro fonts? I think we should use our branding fonts in the installer, but I'm not sure how I feel about changing the default fonts of DEs.

Yes, I believe so, I don't see major drawbacks of that. LCP [Stasiek] https://lcp.world -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I don't like how Source Sans Pro has significantly different letter spacing than Source Serif Pro. With KDE Plasma's default font family (Noto), the serif and sans-serif styles have almost the same size and spacing. It's not stylish like Ubuntu's default font, but it's easy on the eyes and has great language support.

Roboto Mono is a beautiful font, but is (still) has issues: • The width of the mono font is not consistent for Normal, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic • Some diacriticals show wrong in 12pt and below. Compare ã with ā. This alone is for me reason enough to not use it.

I do. While I like Source Code Pro as such, I have a big problem with it: once I switch konsole to use it, it stops showing bold (e.g. for file headers in "git diff"). It's a paradox as this font has more weight variants than others (or perhaps that is the problem?). Just a wild guess - maybe it uses a SemiBold which looks like Regular on typical resolutions/sizes? Kind regards, Stefan-- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

More paradoxical is that, if konsole for one reason or another thinks there is no "bold", that it does not even synthesize a bold like xterm normally would. That, of course, all assuming that the "show bold as color" option is off. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I've used Source Sans Pro but reverted to DejaVu Sans (Mono) after two weeks. By the time I tested both, I found that Unicode support was way better in DejaVu. Things might have changed. I personally hate serif font to the fact that I open the CSS editor in my web browser to disable the prefered font of a site if it is in serif, so I can read it in DejaVu again. Yes, I really hate serif fonts. Actually, since a few years ago, Source * Pro family gained support of a bunch of new languages, so it's way better now than it was during the initial suggestion by Richard. I certainly don't hate Serifs, but I don't use them that much :D LCP [Stasiek] https://lcp.world -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
