Personally agree with Lars and reforce that upgrading should not in any case broke a working system.
Don't like to speak as the "green grass of neighbour is more green than mine", but so far Ubuntu's upgrades from older to newer releases always gone perfectly.
I can't really speak about Ubuntu because I've only administrated one Ubuntu machine so far.
