A system must not be switched from sysvinit to systemd with an upgrade.
Says who?
A long time user.
Go with systemd if it is a fresh install. With an upgrade I strongly suggest to check with the user back.

Personally agree with Lars and reforce that upgrading should not in any case broke a working system. Don't like to speak as the "green grass of neighbour is more green than mine", but so far Ubuntu's upgrades from older to newer releases always gone perfectly.
