The next rpmnew file was for zypp.conf because I retain two more older kernel versions than the default. So I thought it would be neat to use the multiversion.d directory for doing that, but there's no example file and the brief example in zypp.conf commentary doesn't actually talk about how to add these entries.

That's already the default anyway, but how does one specify which kernels to keep using this directory?
Add a line like:
multiversion.kernels = latest,latest-1,running
to /etc/zypp/zypp.conf
There are comments in zypp.conf that explain this.
He is asking about NOT using that line in /etc/zypp/zypp.conf, but instead a file like /etc/zypp/multiversion.d/kernel - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
