Hello all, been lurking for a few weeks so guess ought to post a brief intro. Before Christmas we converted one of our old servers to run SuSE Linux 6.3, primarily to run Squid and Apache. It works very well, the only problems I have are: * never got taper to work * named seems unbelievably slow (I was hoping it would cache DNS information for the network * Squid usage script someone gave me doesn't work Any pointers on the above most welcome! Other than that very pleased with it, hadn't used SuSE before (played with RedHat and Debian a little at Cambridge). All a learning curve, I am very interested in retiring old machines to become Internet terminals running Netscrape off a powerful server so interesting to monitor those threads. -- Glenn Cameron - King Henry VIII School __!__ Warwick Road, Coventry CV3 6AQ -----o----- Tel 024 7667 3442 (262) Fax 024 7667 7456 " " Mobile: 0771 383 9447 Web: http://www.khviii.com/

I would strongly recommend reading the docs for named and squid through - these tools will not work without configuration, named especially! /usr/doc/packages is the place to start. Named is NOT easy to configure, and will NOT work out of the box on a network. -- James Samuel Network Manager, SuSE Linux Ltd. Phone: +44 (0)208 387 4088 Fax: +44 (0)208 387 4010

/usr/doc/packages is the place to start. Named is NOT easy to configure, and will NOT work out of the box on a network.
Point taken, however I can't find anything in /usr/doc/packages, unless I'm missing something. So read the man page but it doesn't seem to explain what the entries in /etc/named.conf, mine looks like options { directory "/var/named"; }; zone "." { type hint; file "root.hint"; }; zone "0.0.127.in-addr.arpa" { type master; file "127.0.0.zone"; }; Suggestions or pointers? -- Glenn Cameron - King Henry VIII School __!__ Warwick Road, Coventry CV3 6AQ -----o----- Tel 024 7667 3442 (262) Fax 024 7667 7456 " " Mobile: 0771 383 9447 Web: http://www.khviii.com/

These are the default entries which you need to keep and add your own entries to. The hint entry points to a file which lists the master servers which are the root of the DNS tree, the 127.0.0 entry is for the loopback interface local to the server. You need to set up a file for each dns zone in the /var/named directory (or wherever the option above points to) with a corresponding entry in the conf file. Use the form of the 127.0.0 entry as a template and checkout the localhost.zone file in \var\named as a simple example. Better still start from the DNS-HOWTO. It is quite good. _____________________________________ Giles Nunn - Network Manager Carms Schools ICT Development Centre Tel: +44 01239 710662 Fax: 710985 ____________________________________
