/usr/doc/packages is the place to start. Named is NOT easy to configure, and will NOT work out of the box on a network.
Point taken, however I can't find anything in /usr/doc/packages, unless I'm missing something. So read the man page but it doesn't seem to explain what the entries in /etc/named.conf, mine looks like
options { directory "/var/named"; };
zone "." { type hint; file "root.hint"; };
zone "0.0.127.in-addr.arpa" { type master; file "127.0.0.zone"; };
Suggestions or pointers?
These are the default entries which you need to keep and add your own entries to. The hint entry points to a file which lists the master servers which are the root of the DNS tree, the 127.0.0 entry is for the loopback interface local to the server. You need to set up a file for each dns zone in the /var/named directory (or wherever the option above points to) with a corresponding entry in the conf file. Use the form of the 127.0.0 entry as a template and checkout the localhost.zone file in \var\named as a simple example. Better still start from the DNS-HOWTO. It is quite good. _____________________________________ Giles Nunn - Network Manager Carms Schools ICT Development Centre Tel: +44 01239 710662 Fax: 710985 ____________________________________
