--- Dermot Mc Laughlin
Hi Everyone,
Hello -
Just recently registered on this list, and have been slyly listening in for the last few days...
Welcome.
Background: Im putting together a report detailing my findings on replacing Win with SuSE, for a school that im working on for. I have done an extensive amount of research already, considering the fact that I was pretty much a Linux nubie a couple of months ago.
You'll be amazed just how much you learn, and how much you'll apply to a given situation. The fun and learning never stops.
As an early indication of progress, Im writing this from SuSE Mozilla; IE got the boot at the first opportunity.
Hehehe, that is good news. :)
I teach Computer Science and Information Communication Technology - and i'm having real problems replacing apps such as Access, and the macromedia suite.
This is a known issue with a lot of schools. While access is a nice GUI-driven tool, I am sure something could (emphasis on that, mind) be done with "postgresql/mysql" but the front-end would have to be bloody good.
As far as the macromedia suite is concerned, I just cant get it installed with wine -- even though I have read reports posted from people who say they can. Have any of you tried this and won?
If you mean web-development, have you looked at "nvu" http://www.nvu.com/? I hear it is very good, but I have never used it.
Do you know of any decent GPL school Administration system replacement I can get my hands on?
Nothiing that is "all-in-one", but if you list some of your requirements, I'm sure some of the fine people here can assist.
Also... Thanks for all the advice filling up this channel to date -- even though it wasn't directed specifically my way, it has been helpfull!!
