There's also Xray for physics type things. I am not so sure about biology, though.
Theres also a few other toys, such as for drawing feynmann diagrams but most scientific programs are highly specialised or ridiculosly powerful, such as MatLab that Octave cant even be compared to.
At least the frequency has been turned down. :)
Well the list has been quiet :) Regards, Ben
Hi Everyone, Just recently registered on this list, and have been slyly listening in for the last few days... Background: Im putting together a report detailing my findings on replacing Win with SuSE, for a school that im working on for. I have done an extensive amount of research already, considering the fact that I was pretty much a Linux nubie a couple of months ago. As an early indication of progress, Im writing this from SuSE Mozilla; IE got the boot at the first opportunity. I have tested most of the schools software (across departments) with wine and managed to get half of it up and running -- there isn't anything too irreplacable in the other half. So then all was going great, until I started thinking about the following: I teach Computer Science and Information Communication Technology - and i'm having real problems replacing apps such as Access, and the macromedia suite. You don't need to tell me about the demerits of Access - I have been convinced of that a long time ago. What alternative could I use (if any)? I need something that can even be tailored to year 7's. As far as the macromedia suite is concerned, I just cant get it installed with wine -- even though I have read reports posted from people who say they can. Have any of you tried this and won? Do you know of any decent GPL school Administration system replacement I can get my hands on? Also... Thanks for all the advice filling up this channel to date -- even though it wasn't directed specifically my way, it has been helpfull!! Cheers Dermot Chat instantly with your online friends? Hi Everyone,
Hello -
Just recently registered on this list, and have been slyly listening in for the last few days...
Welcome.
Background: Im putting together a report detailing my findings on replacing Win with SuSE, for a school that im working on for. I have done an extensive amount of research already, considering the fact that I was pretty much a Linux nubie a couple of months ago.
You'll be amazed just how much you learn, and how much you'll apply to a given situation. The fun and learning never stops.
As an early indication of progress, Im writing this from SuSE Mozilla; IE got the boot at the first opportunity.
Hehehe, that is good news. :)
I teach Computer Science and Information Communication Technology - and i'm having real problems replacing apps such as Access, and the macromedia suite.
This is a known issue with a lot of schools. While access is a nice GUI-driven tool, I am sure something could (emphasis on that, mind) be done with "postgresql/mysql" but the front-end would have to be bloody good.
As far as the macromedia suite is concerned, I just cant get it installed with wine -- even though I have read reports posted from people who say they can. Have any of you tried this and won?
If you mean web-development, have you looked at "nvu" http://www.nvu.com/? I hear it is very good, but I have never used it.
Do you know of any decent GPL school Administration system replacement I can get my hands on?
Nothiing that is "all-in-one", but if you list some of your requirements, I'm sure some of the fine people here can assist.

I have used Knoda and MySQL with success at AS and A2 for the last 2 years in ICT.
You don't need to tell me about the demerits of Access - I have been convinced of that a long time ago. What alternative could I use (if any)? I need something that can even be tailored to year 7's.
OpenOffice works great for flat files in spreadsheet or Dbase format.
As far as the macromedia suite is concerned, I just cant get it installed with wine -- even though I have read reports posted from people who say they can. Have any of you tried this and won?
Web projects are notoriously difficult to get high grades in so why not do a database project instead.
Do you know of any decent GPL school Administration system replacement I can get my hands on?
There is SchoolTool from the Shuttleworth foundation regards garry

We saw SchoolTool demonstrated at the FLOSSIE conference a couple of months back and although it looked promising it's fair to say that it's still development software and isn't ready to take over fully from an existing management system. Those wanting to contribute to the development of SchoolTool could run it in parrallel with their existing software, however. Cheers, Tony

Personally, I strongly dislike SIMS, but what things make it "development software"? -- Matt ____________________________________________________________ Yahoo! Messenger - Communicate instantly..."Ping" your friends today! Download Messenger Now http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com/download/index.html
