Hi all, last discussion about Contrib future ended up and there was nothing changed. So I propose to change the maintenance policy for Contrib on wiki and allow version updates in case of serious problems. But I'm unsure what in case if new package will require a new version of library distributed with openSUSE. What do you think about this case? This will have an advantage also for Factory, because opening of it is a big step in itself. So instead of changing a Factory development process and maintenance rules, we could use Contrib as an learning environment about community based repository (and what problems will appears if we allow the version updates ;-)). And if it will be reliable in future, we will merge Factory and Contrib to one repository. I think If version update is not possible maintainer should create fix, if he does not want or is not able to create this fix, then someone from novell stuff must handle this rare (I hope) cases -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-contrib+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-contrib+help@opensuse.org

If the library follows the naming policy and has a different soname, so it can be installed besides the one in the core distribution, I see no problem. Other cases I would block by default - and decide on a case by case basis an exception, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, Director Platform / openSUSE, aj@suse.de SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

so it means, you want to add this newer library to contrib repo in this case ?

It can be done,. but *only* if package name and library name (*.so) is not conflicting with base packages from factory. -- -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-contrib+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-contrib+help@opensuse.org

I wouldn't have a problem with it - unless I miss some complications ;) Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, Director Platform / openSUSE, aj@suse.de SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

From my POW there should one complication: Packages with complicated dependencies - for example KDE applications. I can imagine that newest package will need a newest KDE(lib), and we will probably not want to update a half of KDE stack in Contrib. But this would be a curiosity, not a regular problem.
