Can you attach acpidump and dmesg (without acpi=off), please. Please check that the fan and thermal module got loaded. Do you have entries in /proc/acpi/fan? Also paste /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/trip_points
i have two entries in /proc/acpi/fan : FN1 and FN2 each of which has one file: empy file "state" of 0 bytes. /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/trip_points has the following empty files: total 0 dr-xr-xr-x 2 root root 0 Jan 9 17:18 ./ dr-xr-xr-x 3 root root 0 Jan 9 18:24 ../ -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Jan 9 18:24 cooling_mode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Jan 9 18:24 polling_frequency -r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 Jan 9 18:24 state -r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 Jan 9 18:24 temperature -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Jan 9 18:24 trip_points the two modules get loaded and give a problem when transitionig device from one state to another. i have switched to 2.6.18.5-jen kernel and now, when booting the if the fan is off and has to transition to on, or it has to remain to off the fan works. when it is on and needs to be turned on is turns off and doesn't start again. i'll attach dmesg and acpidump files. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Remove the status of NEEDINFO from this bug." button, below the field to enter text... No problem, this always happens if you provide "needed info" the first time :)
i have two entries in /proc/acpi/fan : FN1 and FN2 each of which has one file: empy file "state" of 0 bytes. The state files are totally empty? There is nothing like: status: on or status: off ?!?
i have switched to 2.6.18.5-jen you mean 2.6.18.5-xen?
Do you have an ICQ account or something, my no. is: #153201830, like that this might get solved a bit faster... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=229214 ------- Comment #6 from trenn@novell.com 2007-03-01 00:57 MST ------- Ah now I understand, the length of /proc/.. files is always zero. Do a cat on them! This is the interface to the kernel. If you write to them, you tell the kernel to do something, if you read from them you, you read out data provided by the kernel. I think your problem is currently discussed on the kernel bugzilla here: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8049 You may want to follow that one up and help a bit testing. If there comes out a non risky patch I can backport it to 10.2. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=229214 ------- Comment #12 from markgray+to-suse@puck.nac.net 2007-03-14 09:01 MST ------- Would a good temporary workaround be to rmmod the buggy acpi modules and let the BIOS control the fan? I have a personal interest in fan bugs because the multiple speed fan in one of my computers has not kicked into high speed mode since installing 10.2 (the room it is in is usually around 60 degree F (15 degree C) lately so I am not all that worried yet -- but summer is on the way). I had a hard disk failure on one of my laptops the very day I installed the kernel-default-2.6.18.8-0.1 update, and that machine was behaving like there was some sort of 5 second loop/hang going on just prior to the fan kicking in, so you can see that fan bugs can be deadly :-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=229214 ------- Comment #13 from trenn@novell.com 2007-03-14 09:20 MST ------- Does it work for you if you e.g. rmmod thermal and fan module? Or not load it: revert them from /etc/sysconfig/kernel (first variable), then invoke mkinitrd. also place in /etc/sysconfig/powersave/common: ACPI_MODULES="ac,battery,button,processor" instead of ACPI_MODULES="" It's not a general solution as e.g. HP laptops rely on the kernel controlling the fan via those modules. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=229214 ------- Comment #14 from markgray+to-suse@puck.nac.net 2007-03-15 08:26 MST ------- All my "at risk" computers are HP's -- but the fans worked properly with 10.0 and 10.1, as well as with memtest86+ (which makes no attempt to handle acpi as far as I know). Having a hard disk failure the same day I installed a kernel update has made me a little anxious about the fan bugs, but I won't know for sure whether I am affected or not until the weather warms up enough to make the fans functioning properly necessary. (Sorry if my input wasted any time -- but having computers die from a kernel bug ...) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
