[Bug 517959] New: Clock shows wrong time
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=517959 Summary: Clock shows wrong time Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: fdan52@comcast.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.4) Gecko/2008103100 SUSE/3.0.4-4.7 Firefox/3.0.4 I have installed 11.1 a number of times. I always select local time (Los Angeles no UTC) during the install. The first time or two reboot, the time is right. Then the the time consistantly falls back 6 hours. the change also effects CMOS system clock requiring me to go into the system setup to correct. This does not resolve the problem. Nor does setting the time from the GUI. The battery is new, so that can't be the problem. If you do, accept that you will see problems and live with it. Here http://en.opensuse.org/SDB%3AConfiguring_the_clock you have an an article that explains the situation. If you use Windows 7, use UTC time and the registry trick explained there. * If you double boot to other systems, and experience a time shift at boot of the size of the difference between UTC and local time, do this: Ensure in Yast that the system timezone is set correctly. In a terminal as root (su -) adjust the time using the command "date". No, do not trust the desktop clock for this. Verify that the timezone is correct. When the clock shows correct (via command date), delete the file "/etc/adjtime". Adjust the CMOS clock, using: hwclock --systohc --localtime Verify both clocks using "hwclock --debug" and "date". That should be all. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The problem is... for openSuSE 12.2 anyway...the /etc/adjtime file was set wrong. However, this should have happened as the results of our decisions in the install. So, we thinks that the install procedure needs a fix. 0.0 0 0.0 0 UTC
where the last value was supposed to be LOCAL ... from our preferences in the installation.
I confirm that. Also, the variable HWCLOCK in /etc/sysconfig/clock does not exist. However, there is another setting, USE_ADJUST="no"; it appears that (in 12.2) adjtime should not be used at all when time is set to localtime, so the contents should be irrelevant. In this case, you should not have the shifting clock problem. I suggest that you verify in the bios the clock before booting 12.2, and if in the subsequent boot the clock is off by X hours, enter a new bugzilla for 12.2, as the problem is different than for the 11.1 reported here. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I just got all the current software for a DVD distribution. I have a 64 bit environment. I have downloaded the correct OS. I couldn't set up the net settings during the installation (an on going bug). I set the correct time during the installation using the correct location (no UTC) for the US west coast (LA). After logging in to SuSE I correcting the net connection. I observed that the clock is incorrect. I tried to fix the time from the desktop and from YAST. Both times correcting the time and setting the sync with the network option. Still after booting, the time is off by seven hours -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=517959 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=517959#c33 --- Comment #33 from Carlos Robinson <carlos.e.r@opensuse.org> 2012-09-15 10:14:31 UTC --- Frank, you changed the priority again; this will only piss people and not help you at all. The maintainer is on vacation, as told before, and when he comes back he will have his priorities. The only clear problem reported in several places is that (and only in oS 12.2) when the user selects "LOCAL" time he gets the line "UTC" in adjtime, or no adjtime at all. The cure for this has been reported in several places. Frank, have you applied it? If this is not your problem, then I most say that I have read again the entire report, and I fail to see a clear description of the problem - I only know that you have a problem with the clock, but not what exactly. Please report what are the exact symptoms, with data to support your observations, and on what openSUSE version. I might suggest, lacking a howto on bug reporting, you have a read here <http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html> -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I chose HW clock to be in the local timezone during installation. After installation has finished, /etc/adjtime looks correct: last line is 'LOCAL'. After rebooting (multiple times) the system time was still correct (with NTP switched off). I assume this is fixed now. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
