[Bug 249638] New: update-status and auditd compute-bound
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=249638 Summary: update-status and auditd compute-bound Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: libzypp AssignedTo: kkaempf@novell.com ReportedBy: crispin@novell.com QAContact: kkaempf@novell.com CC: visnov@novell.com, seth.arnold@novell.com Several days ago, ZMD/libzypp became problematic because it told me of patches available for ClamAV, but then failed to update them. I found no way to clear the "orange !" display on my desktop because I couldn't actually update them. Yesterday, after boot, the update-status daemon ran for 5 minutes of hard compute-bound work with a lot of disk IO, even though there was no network connection available (I was on a train). Today, update-status and auditd seem to run out of control, constantly compute-bound and doing lots of disk I/O. Worse, auditd appears to not be working, as I can't get audit messages from AppArmor to make it through to /var/log/audit/audit.log any more (this used to work). My computer has become unusable; it overheats, and sucks battery power at an absurd rate. I am therefore going to follow the instructions here http://opensuse-community.org/Package_Sources and remove zmd, in the hopes that I can get auditd to work again. NOTE: This is classified as "SuSE Other" because I cannot find a classification for openSUSE 10.2 :( -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=249638 ------- Comment #1 from crispin@novell.com 2007-02-27 23:48 MST ------- Removed zmd per above and rebooted, and functionality returned to normal. auditd works normally, AppArmor can get events out. Updating through YaST worked. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It does that consistently after powering up the machine. For example, on my laptop I have the update-status process consuming 100% CPU for 20 minutes, with or without internet connection. This is pissing all over the autonomy of the laptop. After removing all the ZEN stuff, opensuse updater is able to tell that there's no internet connection and stops wasting CPU cycles after 20 seconds. A quick fix would be that update-status is made aware of the power situation--AC or battery--and runs only on AC. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
