[Bug 1061945] New: frequent hangs, dell studio 17/1749 after upgrade from LEAP 42.2 to LEAP 42.3
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1061945 Bug ID: 1061945 Summary: frequent hangs, dell studio 17/1749 after upgrade from LEAP 42.2 to LEAP 42.3 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.3 Hardware: x86-64 OS: openSUSE 42.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org Assignee: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: agesen@cs.stanford.edu QA Contact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- A week or so ago, I did a fresh install of LEAP 42.3 on my Westmere era dell studio 17. Since then: frequent hangs, seemingly GPU related. Prior to this install, it was running LEAP 42.2 and there were no such problems. But 42.2 was closing in on end-of-support so I (optimistically) upgraded. Now the computer is quite unstable. For example: [ 5199.475815] drm/i915: Resetting chip after gpu hang That one recovers after a few seconds. But I have even more cases of hangs that don't recover, i.e., hard reset. Please let me know how I can help debug this. Created attachment 756935 [details] Piotr's Xorg.0.log file
Indeed also an Ironlake GPU. (In reply to Piotr Kardasinski-Bunalski from comment #49)
Hello,
thanks for your answer. I have attached Xorg.0.log as requested. Additionally I have attached also .xsession log file, where there are a lot of errors related to graphics I suppose. Just for your info I have in my PC Intel i5-540 (Arandale) with integrated graphic card. According to information on Intel site, I have found, it is Intel® Iris® Graphics 6100 (Broadwell). Operating system is just clean installation from DVD. Of course all available updates are already installed.
No, according to the X logfile it's an Ironlake (Generation 5 from 2010), not Broadwell (Generation 8 from 2015). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_graphics_processing_units -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I hope I applied changes correctly :-) as described in comment #39. Look like it helped, no shifting observed, no hangs. However, is there any reliable way to verify and confirm that the issue is gone? Can we check any logs to confirm?
No, you won't find this in the logs. So uninstalling the kernel 4.9 drivers and going back to 4.4 ones helps in your case (that's what happens when uninstalling drm-kmp package). You could also test kernel-of-the-day to see if things may work again with Leap 15. Instructions in the comments above. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
