http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1180617 Bug ID: 1180617 Summary: Better automatic server selection for higher download speeds Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: libzypp Assignee: zypp-maintainers@suse.de Reporter: claudius.ellsel@live.de QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- On Tumbleweed when using `sudo zypper dup` I get download speeds around 4 MiB/s. While that might be ok for many internet connections, mine is capable of around 20 MiB/s and I'd like to make use of that so upgrading the system takes less time. I learned that the default download.opensuse.org server is doing the selection of a mirror. I suggest to also take things like download speed into consideration, not only proximity or ping. Probably filed under the wrong component, but I did not find a better one. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1180617 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1180617#c1 Michael Andres <ma@suse.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution|--- |DUPLICATE --- Comment #1 from Michael Andres <ma@suse.com> --- The component is fine. It's actually more an issue of the libzypp backend than for download.opensuse.org. download.opensuse.org can hardly estimate the quality of your local connection to a specific mirror. Currently download.opensuse.org either redirects us to a single mirror or sends us a list of local mirrors. In case a download is spread across multiple mirrors we already monitor the speed and try to avoid/switch mirrors when they become slow. But there are more thing we can do. We're currently about to create an enhanced media backend which will be tuned to speed up repo refresh and package downloads. We hope we can make a very first preview available in a few of weeks. I close this request as a duplicate of the tracker bug collecting which will be fixed or addressed by the new backend. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 1125470 *** -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Nice to hear this is already being worked on. I will follow up there, then! -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
