[Bug 983878] New: "Create New (libreoffice file)" right mouse button menu item missing
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=983878 Bug ID: 983878 Summary: "Create New (libreoffice file)" right mouse button menu item missing Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.1 Hardware: All OS: openSUSE 42.1 Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE Workspace (Plasma) Assignee: opensuse-kde-bugs@opensuse.org Reporter: michaelof@rocketmail.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:46.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/46.0 Build Identifier: On my OpenSuse Leap 42.1 box, migrated from 13.1, there are no "Create New LibreOffice Writer/Calc/Impress/..." right mouse button menu items in KDE's Dolphin. Verified in IRC channel #KDE that these menu items are installed as default e.g. in kubuntu, relevant kubuntu package is "libreoffice-kde". Found also that there is an "unstable" package for OpenSuse available: https://software.opensuse.org/package/dolphin-libreoffice-templates I've analyzed the content of this package and read this forum thread https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/517427-Dolphin-How-to-use-the-Tem..., so I was able to create my own local KDE/Dolphin "templates". My question is: These "New LibreOffice file..." links are just 2 files (.desktop and source), plus localization, so why aren't they contained in the standard OpenSuse Distribution also? Unfortunately I'm only able to localize them for English and German, so can't contribute in general for all :-) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open (KDE's) Dolphin 2. Navigate to any directory you have write access to 3. Right Mouse Button click on any folder or "white space" (NOT a file) Actual Results: No "create new..." menu items for LibreOffice doc types Expected Results: Menu items for LibreOffice doc types -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

But as I wrote, the missing 2 files are simple, nearly no-brainers.
To create a package as you envision (in particular if you want "Create New" entries for all OpenDocument filetypes), you'd need more than 2 files though. ;-) Anyway, openSUSE is a community distribution. Everybody who wants to can package things on OBS, and even submit it to the distribution. Not having this is no bug though, and in particular no bug in "KDE Workspace (Plasma)", to be handled by the KDE team. TBH, I personally have no intentions to create such a package, and that's why I closed it as WONTFIX again. But ok, we can just as well let it linger around for some more years...
So are you sure that your hint for calligra-extras-dolphin, I've just checked that installing this pkg means installing the complete calligra suite because of the pkg deps, roughly est. hundreds of MB disk space, is a constructive solution of this issue?
It is a possible solution to the "problem" you reported (no "Create New" entries for LibreOffice documents). I do see a possible issue btw, if openSUSE would install a package with those templates you mentioned by default: somebody who install calligra will have those entries twice then. And I haven't even checked if those files can even be packaged in openSUSE with regards to their license and copyright. I have to say though that just creating such a package would likely be less work than discussing it at length here. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Actually I already worked on a "compromise": I split out calligra's "Create New..." templates in a separate subpackage that does *not* require calligra installed. (the dependency comes from the thumbnailer and the file properties plugin, which use libcalligra to open the files)
Saves us from "reinventing the wheel" and having to maintain an extra package.
I will probably submit it to KDE:Extra (and Tumbleweed/Leap 15.2) in the near future...
Done in Tumbleweed and 15.2 now (together with the update to 3.2.0): There is a new package "calligra-extras-filemanagertemplates" now, that contains these templates for kio's "Create New" menu, and doesn't depend on calligra itself. It supplements kio, so should actually get installed automatically too. I don't intend to submit an update for Leap 15.1, but it is of course available in KDE:Extra as well (since a little over a week already). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
