Installed into fresh EXT4 true (not VM) partition. This time I did NOT add the HAL module, NOR add/use the KDE3-HAL-enabled repo. Everything seems to work fine, upon cursory use, with one exception. When I mount an USB Thumb Drive, KDE comes up with its regular "what do you want to do?" dialogue, but immediately after selecting an (open a window) option, I get the following error message: "Unable to mount medium "openSUSE-DVD-i586-Build0050". Reason: Error mounting /dev/sdb1 at /run/media/root/openSUSE-DVD-i586-Build0050: Command-line `mount -t "iso9660" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=0,gid=0,iocharset=utf8,mode=0400,dmode=0500" "/dev/sdb1" "/run/media/root/openSUSE-DVD-i586-Build0050"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so" SDB1 is, of course, the USB thumb drive, and is the one used to install RC1. Also, nothing shows up subsequently in /media or /mnt in Konquerer as to the contents of that thumb drive, after the error message appears. I don't know if this is a KDE3 or 12.2 issue, but thought that I would mention it. NOTE: 1. Mounting a DVD in a SATA-connected reader/writer works fine and normal. Its contents also show up in /media in Konquerer. 2. Both the thumb drive and the dvd may be ejected/released using an entry that shows up normally in the "Storage Media" icon on the desktop. Also, FWIW, after only ICEWM is installed and Yast invoked from the menu, nothing happens. But if I open a terminal and type "yast2", the graphical Yast applet appears. I then sucessfully installed openSUSE 12.2rc1 from that flash drive. Everything works but for inserting that same stick as a test after the successful install has occured, rebooted, and KDE3-Factory installed OK. As I said, DVDs and CDs are recognised. I installed 12.2/rc1/x86 this way via the usbkey with the iso written onto it. I dont just copy the .iso image onto a usbkey/usbstick with a pre-existing filesystem on the usbkey itself. its the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SUSE_Studio_ImageWriter which is creating the blocks on the stick. the stick doesnt show a valid filesystem after it has been (over)written by the suse studio imagewriter, thats how I remember it. I actually dont know if it was different in previous versions of opensuse and the .iso files from back then. This SUSE Imagewriter-written flash drive seems to have an unrecognizable FS on it that works for install, but not subsequently for normal file operations. Or else the mount command is incorrect. That command seems to be imbedded in the error message in the original post of mine in this bug report. I'm not knowledgable enough to determine if it's a baseline/kernel issue, or a KDE3 issue, etc. I can't test on KDE 4 since I don't have a version of that installed. It also is not recognizable by my 12.1 production KDE3 system, although the error message is shorter: "mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so" As an aside, Win7 also does not recognize the file format (although that could be because it is a standard or customized EXT2, 3, 4, etc file system), and asks if the drive should be formatted when it is inserted. There are, to my knowledge, no Flash-specific downloads of openSUSE released or development software. There's no /dev/sdb1 according to this mount output (and to /var/log/messages), just /dev/sdb. Not sure if it's udisks-glue or kde3 that tells to use /dev/sdb1, but that's wrong. Cleared the "/var/log/messages" file. 2. Inserted the flash thumb drive (new .iso contents); got the regular erroneous behaviour. 3. Opened the "messages" file and put a dotted line across at the bottom. 4. Opened a terminal and issued "udisks --mount /dev/sdb" 5. Up popped a "what do you want to do" KDE window and, after selecting "open a new window", it came up properly in Konquerer, as it should. So it worked! 6. So I went back into that test partition, I killed it using KSysGuard and then inserted the flash stick again. Got the erroneous message, as usual, but after issuing "udisks --mount /dev/sdb", I got a "what do you want to do" KDE window and, after selecting "open a new window", it came up properly in Konquerer, as it should. After the error message comes up (original post), if I issue the commant "mount /dev/sdb /mnt", then it mounts properly and I can see the contents and structure in Konq, for example. So it must be a bad command issued by udisks or whatever. New, stock install of 12.2RC2-32bit LXDE into real EXT4 partition, from downloaded DVD. Now, the .iso file of the DVD, which was burned to a flash drive using Suse Studio Imagewriter, is not even recognized when it is inserted; this is the same flash drive that LXDE was sucessfully installed from. So, there's been a regression, as 12.2RC1 at least tried to mount it (albeit /dev/sdb1, rather than the correct /dev/sdb) and would come up with the error message. Also, issuing a "mount /dev/sdb /mnt" does not do anything, where it would in RC1. This same flash drive gives the error message in 12.1 KDE3, so it's not that the flash drive is different or anything, from my previous testing. As an aside, a different flash drive that is bootable (with Hiren's 15.1) *IS* recognised properly by 12.2RC2 Ilya, how do we get this fixed.
