@Ilya Chernykh 2, 3, 4 & 8:
In 12.2RC1 & KDE3, FAT16/32 USB sticks are identified correctly when inserted,
in addition to CDs and DVDs, all without HAL and without any use of HAL-enabled
repo.
This SUSE Imagewriter-written flash drive seems to have an unrecognizable FS on
it that works for install, but not subsequently for normal file operations. Or
else the mount command is incorrect. That command seems to be imbedded in the
error message in the original post of mine in this bug report. I'm not
knowledgable enough to determine if it's a baseline/kernel issue, or a KDE3
issue, etc. I can't test on KDE 4 since I don't have a version of that
installed.
It also is not recognizable by my 12.1 production KDE3 system, although the
error message is shorter:
"mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1, missing
codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found
in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so"
As an aside, Win7 also does not recognize the file format (although that could
be because it is a standard or customized EXT2, 3, 4, etc file system), and
asks if the drive should be formatted when it is inserted.
There are, to my knowledge, no Flash-specific downloads of openSUSE released or
development software. Instead, at the bottom of the openSUSE download page is
the link as to how a flash image of the download should be done, and that's the
one I followed.
