[Bug 1053314] New: Update Tumbleweed to Firefox 55 (and drop i586)
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1053314 Bug ID: 1053314 Summary: Update Tumbleweed to Firefox 55 (and drop i586) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: All OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Firefox Assignee: bnc-team-mozilla@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: dontarius@yahoo.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created attachment 736171 --> http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/attachment.cgi?id=736171&action=edit www.opensuse.org There have been several discussions about Tumbleweed remaining on Firefox 52 ESR due to Tumbleweed's official support of i586. For example: https://www.reddit.com/r/openSUSE/comments/6sdbt8/why_the_hell_firefox_in_tu... https://www.reddit.com/r/openSUSE/comments/6hnx37/is_tumbleweed_going_to_han... In my view (and the majority view as far as I can tell) it makes little sense to have a rolling distribution comprising the latest and greatest software, with the limitation that the software must work on decades old hardware. If support for i586 must be maintained for those who require it, it would be a lot more natural to do so in Leap. For context, the descriptions below are taken from the very top of www.opensuse.org: Tumbleweed: Get the newest Linux packages with our rolling release. Fast! Integrated! Stabilized! Tested! Leap: Get the most complete Linux distribution with openSUSE’s latest regular-release version! The current policy of holding back "the newest Linux packages" in Tumbleweed in order to have Tumbleweed be more "complete" in its support of i586 just appears totally backwards and confused. Especially when the software being held back is as central to today's computing experience as a web browser. Support for Firefox 52 ESR will end in June 2018, so it's only a matter of months before i586 support will need to be dropped anyway. Having a Tumbleweed identity crisis over i586 support will only hurt the distribution in the long run; supporting older hardware really should have been for Leap. It's definitely a policy decision that will impact Tumbleweed's future, and I'm not sure how these decisions typically are made. I've filed this report in hopes of starting the discussion amongst the powers that be. I'm casting my vote for updating to Firefox 55 as soon as possible as this is the only choice consistent with Tumbleweed's raison d'être. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

However, I thought it was worthwhile pointing out that Firefox profiles for version 55+ can be "refreshed" to work with Firefox 52 via about:support (though I have not tested this personally). Presumably this would also work for certain other "old" versions of Firefox. This is still a bug. It's not resolved on the list, the thread ends without resolution, FF is still stuck on a not "latest stable" version, and in a few short months will be stuck on an entirely unsupported version. NB point of opening a bug was to see a resolution; this could be "willnotfix" keeping FF52 forever (which leaves tumbleweed broken), "willnotfix" move to another i586 supporting browser (is there one?), or "resolved" (move to latest stable version of FF. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

The package was switched from the fast release cycle to the ESR at 55 time in order to not having to do continuous updates of dependencies, as suitable for Leap maintenance. That being said it is entirely feasible for Tumbleweed to follow the fast release cycle. This includes the drop of i586 which is not unprecedented (chromium). The fact that this has not happened yet should not be followed up by every person wanting it filing a bug, as if to track their special interest. I suggest that you pick up the discussion on the list to bring it to a resolution. Personally I would not even want parallel versions in Tumbleweed. Leap maintenance likewise has no need for the mozilla:Factory/MozillaFirefox devel package to be close to what is in Tumbleweed. Obviously the maintainers are aware of the upstream ESR timeline. Would it not be reasonable to expect the maintainers to go to the next ESR by then. What speaks for the fast releases in Tumbleweed is that it would drive packaging and updating of dependencies, so as to not build up a larger chunk of work. When I resolve the issue as moved, that does not mean that I claim your issue to be resolved on the mailing. I merely think that it should be discussed there. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
