[Bug 327510] New: r8169 no change of speed
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=327510 Summary: r8169 no change of speed Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: RC 1 Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: mbra@gmx.ch QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Hardware: Netgear GA511 (Gigabit PC Card) 16:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8169 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 10) The module r8169.ko will be automatically loaded. The card works, but only at 100MBit, even when connected to a 1GBit Switch. Also it is not possible to change the speed with ethtool down to 10 or up to 1000 MBit. Also changing duplex and autoneg settings will be ignored. Example: ethtool -s eth1 speed 10 autoneg off duplex half ethtool eth1 Settings for eth1: Supported ports: [ TP ] Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Full Supports auto-negotiation: Yes Advertised link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Full Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes Speed: 100Mb/s Duplex: Full Port: Twisted Pair PHYAD: 0 Transceiver: internal Auto-negotiation: on Supports Wake-on: pumbg Wake-on: g Current message level: 0x00000033 (51) Link detected: yes Nothing changed! https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=327510#c2 --- Comment #2 from Jiri Bohac <jbohac@novell.com> 2007-09-26 13:22:02 MST --- I could not reproduce the problem on x86_64 with my r8169 card. I am just installing 10.3 RC1 on an 386 and will try there tomorrow. One thing I noticed: for some reason, the i386 kernel has the experimental NAPI enabled for r8169. x86_64 does not. I tried on x86_64 with and without NAPI, but it worked in both cases. Still, I will try to reproduce this with and without NAPI on i386 as well, as I think the bug might be there. m.bracher: can you please attach the output of the hwinfo command? Also, the i386 -debug kernel has NAPI disabled. If you could try with that version (download e.g. from here: http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source/suse/i5... ), that could help. I have no idea why we have NAPI enabled for this driver in i386 and why it is disabled in the -debug kernel though. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It is not possible to change speed, duplex or autoneg with ethtool. I compiled the old r1000 module, and it works, I can change speed, duplex and autoneg via ethtool. It seems to be an incompatibility between the r8169 driver and Netgear. Remark: to compile r1000 on latest kernel: # diff r1000_v1.05/src/r1000_n.c /tmp/r1000_n.c 1718a1719,1721

In my case it happens on the internal NIC on my Gigabyte P35-DS3 motherboard. This identifies as "Gigabyte RTL 8111/8168B". Careful Googling reveals that others have run into this bug over the past few months. My experience is that the NIC seems to connect at 10 megabit instead of 1000, making file transfers on the LAN excruciatingly slow, though they do get there after several hours. I could be wrong about the following, but some people talked about the bug being the result of the r8169 driver running against this chip, and that things improved when they forced the use of an r8168 driver. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Connected to a gbit switch (tested with managed and unmanaged switch), the card does not recognize the link (ethtool also tells so and all lights are of), autoneg enabled but does not work. Connected to a 100mbit switch or managed switch hardcoded to 100mbit, link is detected and connection works. But ethtool always shows half duplex, even if switch is set to 100mbit full-duplex. Connection works, probably output of ethtool is wrong (card reports wrong information). Card is a Netgear GA511 (pcmcia). It is not physically defect, verified with another card, same behaviour -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I do have a ISO with the recent 2.6.27 kernel (for recovering from the e1000e bug), you could use it to do a quick check. ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/kkeil/testing/e1000e/e1000e-recover.iso Boot from the iso the recovery system and try to setup the network. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

With the mac, everything just works. With linux, everything just doesn't work. Every day I spent an hour or two tracking down bugs. Never could get cups printing to work right. I guess you linux people just like it that way, just enjoy having problems and fixing them all the time, maybe you feet l33t about it. Its your life, live it up. If linux has any future is Ubuntu. Or my hackintosh. Statistics show people abandoning linux for mac. Here is the link if you are tired of the linux pain http://pcwizcomputer.com/osx86search/ and want to just get higher level things done or have a life. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I only saw this with one card, a other card (same brand, same chips) did not show it. Also the 8168 driver from Realtek did show it. So I did some more investigation on hardware itself and found that here was a short circuit between two contacts in the RJ45 socket of the card, I removed the socket and soldered a new one, but the defect card still show this behavior, seems it was really damaged now. So I now think this issue is more related to faulty hardware as to a driver issue. Lower speed with Realtek cards is quiet common, because it is really cheap hardware with cheap components, you cannot compare a Ferrari with a VW. The ethtool autoneg setting seems to be still a driver bug also in 11.1. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
