[Bug 1130294] New: Problem reading past end of CD-ROMs?
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1130294 Bug ID: 1130294 Summary: Problem reading past end of CD-ROMs? Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 15.0 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel Assignee: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: Ulrich.Windl@rz.uni-regensburg.de QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Sine a few months I'm having the new problem that my BlueRay drive goes crazy once dracut or GUB2 updates the bootloader: The BlueRay drive (with a boot CD in it) spins up, makes noises as if continually relacibrating, and everything seems to hang, and pressing the ejct button does not work for a long time (>30s). Eventually when the tray opens, dracut continues, and the the update finshes. My suspect is that the kernel (or dracut or some related code) tried to access the medium past it end, and the drive does not like that. For a recent occurrence the kernel messages look like this: Mär 18 21:30:12 host.site [RPM][4520]: erase dracut-044.1-lp150.14.18.1.x86_64: success Mär 18 21:30:12 host.site [RPM][4520]: Transaction ID 5c8fffd2 finished: 0 Mär 18 21:30:12 host.site [RPM][4567]: Transaction ID 5c8fffd4 started Mär 18 21:30:12 host.site [RPM][4567]: erase java-1_8_0-openjdk-devel-1.8.0.191-lp150.2.9.2.x86_64: success Mär 18 21:30:14 host.site [RPM][4567]: install java-1_8_0-openjdk-devel-1.8.0.201-lp150.2.12.1.x86_64: success Mär 18 21:30:14 host.site [RPM][4567]: erase java-1_8_0-openjdk-devel-1.8.0.191-lp150.2.9.2.x86_64: success Mär 18 21:30:14 host.site [RPM][4567]: install java-1_8_0-openjdk-devel-1.8.0.201-lp150.2.12.1.x86_64: success Mär 18 21:30:14 host.site [RPM][4567]: Transaction ID 5c8fffd4 finished: 0 Mär 18 21:31:26 host.site kernel: sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] tag#30 FAILED Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE Mär 18 21:31:26 host.site kernel: sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] tag#30 Sense Key : Medium Error [current] Mär 18 21:31:26 host.site kernel: sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] tag#30 Add. This doesn't sound like a kernel problem but rather the wrong request for a device. Reassigned.
My reasoning was that every block device has a valid block range (detected by the kernel) trying to read a block outside that range is not very likely to be successful (and thus should be avoided). What also made me think that it is a kernel problem is the masses of kernel messages being generated. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1130294 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1130294#c10 --- Comment #10 from Ulrich Windl <Ulrich.Windl@rz.uni-regensburg.de> --- When installing updates yesterday (including kernel and grub), the optical drive spun up only shortly and stopped soon again without making that terrible noise. So I got the impression that the bug may be fixed in the meantime. Not 100% sure, however... -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1130294 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1130294#c12 --- Comment #12 from Ulrich Windl <Ulrich.Windl@rz.uni-regensburg.de> --- As a co-incidence: I had a DVD (a "pressed" one, not a "burned" one) in the drive when uninstalling some kernel modules. The drive started to make noises and everything hung until some seconds after I had issued an eject command for the drive (pressing the eject button on the drive repeatedly like mad did not stop it). The optiocal drive sounds like a floppy drive doing "track 0 calibration" all the time and I hear something hitting a hard wall, and that doesn't sound well. Needless to say that only Linux triggers such an effect; I never had such problems with Windows. So very short: The problem still exists with Leap 15.2 and the latest kernel. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1130294 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1130294#c13 --- Comment #13 from Michal Suchanek <msuchanek@suse.com> --- This is not really a problem. With all weird copy protections it is not always possible to know what is real medium size. The drive should handle access to sectors which do not exist. It is normal that it makes disturbing noises wile seeking. You have shown that it is os-prober that probes the drive causing it to spin up. It does not make much sense for os-prober to probe optical media but that can be said about pretty much everything os-prober does. It is normally not required so you can just remove it. rpm -e os-prober zypper al os-prober -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1130294 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1130294#c14 --- Comment #14 from Ulrich Windl <Ulrich.Windl@rz.uni-regensburg.de> --- The problem still persists. I found two solutions: 1) When "yast2 online_update" was called from command line, press ^Z to suspend Yast. Then press the eject button to eject the medium (that won't work when yast is running). The the process continues. 2) Use the "eject" command to eject the medium. It will take a little time, but eventually the medium will eject and the update process continues. Still I'd like to have a better solution. Here is the process list (ps ax) when things were hanging: i7g4x4a:/home/windl # ps ax PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND 1 ?
