http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=600184 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=600184#c0 Summary: zypper: irritating msg: The following package updates will NOT be installed: Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: koenig@linux.de QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- "zypper up" have me this msg today which I found disturbing: The following package updates will NOT be installed: elfutils gdbm gnome-desktop gnome-desktop-lang gzip kdebase4-runtime-branding-openSUSE kdebase4-workspace-branding-openSUSE kdelibs4-branding-openSUSE kdm-branding-openSUSE libasm1 libdw1 libebl1 libelf1 perl perl-base rpm The following packages are going to be upgraded: bundle-lang-kde-de bundle-lang-kde-en 2 packages to upgrade. .. I guess this msg tries to tell me that there is 32bit package with newer version than the 64 bit rpm because # zypper se -s elfutils Loading repository data... Reading installed packages... S | Name | Type | Version | Arch | Repository --+----------+---------+------------+--------+----------- i | elfutils | package | 0.142-7.25 | x86_64 | f-oss v | elfutils | package | 0.142-7.27 | i586 | f-oss or # zypper se -s rpm .. i | rpm | package | 4.8.0-2.7 | x86_64 | f-oss v | rpm | package | 4.8.0-2.8 | i586 | f-oss whatever is the real reason for this msg it's (a) very disturbing and should be changed/rephrased (or even better comletely avoided;) and thus (b) one more good reason to keep RPM versions and buildnumbers for i586 and x86_64 archs in sync... -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

@Jano: But I would not name them 'package updates', because they are no updates as they violate some solver policy. Those are just 'higher versions' which cant be autoselected for some reason. Telling it that way the user will not assume he's missing something if they are not installed.
I agree, i would just like the 'section title' to be max 79 chars long, and that's a bit hard in this case. Any suggestion? But maybe we should exclude the changed arch case - seems a bit useless, and it is actually what Harald reports IIUC. And list just vendor/priority/deps cases.
+ I'd simply write out a line telling that there are N packages with higher versions available, which were not selected due to some policy violation. The full list (including versions and violated policy) can be seen in the detailed view.
I'd like to keep the simple list of package names shown right away (my preference, but if more people will ask not to show them, i'll change it of course), but i agree on the detailed view, where the reason would be listed as well. Currently one has to do 'zypper up packagename' too see the reason.
++ If there is some spare time, offer a way to pick packages from this list and add them to the transaction.
Yup, i have this on my radar, together with other options to modify current selection when the summary is shown (like take away from or add to the list, show detailed info, changelog of a package from the list, etc). Just the spare time is missing :) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Maybe the 'arch downgrade' case; but the arch upgrade (i585->x86_64) could be interesting? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Is it normal/known that the reason doesn't appear in an up-to-date 11.2? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
