https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=643401 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=643401#c0 Summary: Cannot Shutdown/Reboot Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: PC OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: tb75252@yahoo.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.10) Gecko/20100915 Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid) Firefox/3.6.10 Using a computer with openSUSE 11.3 (64-bit) freshly installed. Install went flawlessly without any kind of error messages. Hardware used: MSI X58 Eclipse, Intel i7-920, 6 GB memory, Seagate 500 GB SATA. openSUSE is the only OS installed. After the install is finished, all programs work fine. HOWEVER when I try to shut down/restart the computer nothing happens! I basically have to use the command "shutdown -h now" or press the power off button to shut down... This also happens in Failsafe mode. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Press the Leave button; 2.Select Turn Off Computer or Restart Computer; 3.Nothing happens. Actual Results: See above description. Expected Results: The computer should either shut down or reboot. But it does nothing. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via e-mail at tb75252@yahoo.com. Yes, it is KDE. Sorry for the omission! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Are you using KDM?
I did a standard install. Not sure if I am using KDM. I am just a newbie and do not really know much about Linux... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

No, no dialog whatsoever. I tell KDE to shutdown and it just sits there without doing anything at all. I also notice that after that my shortcuts (such as Firefox) no longer work. Everything seems to be frozen...
Does this mean you you also cannot open the KDE menu afterwards? Can you still open krunner via 'Alt+F2'? If no, does switching to a virtual terminal via 'Ctrl+Alt+F1' work? Is there anything special in .xsession-errors? Or another try: Does the shortcut 'Ctrl+Alt+Del' bring up a shutdown dialog in a working KDE session? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

At the ":/>" prompt I issue the command "cd home".
The first one actually stands for /home/your_user_name and is what is usually called your home directory and where the file .xsession-errors is located. (You can always type pwd to see the current working directory) (In reply to comment #12)
Well, this is weird... I just clicked on the Leave button (the red/white icon in the lower right corner of the screen), selected Turn Off Computer -- and it actually turned off! I rebooted, selected Restart Computer -- and it restarted!
I don't know what changed but the whole process seems to be working right now.
So let's close the bug then and hope that it does not come back :) (Otherwise reopen the bug report.)
Now, if I only could get the audio issue fixed with my sound card... :-) The weird thing here is that I can listen to music CDs, but I get no audio if I go to Internet radio sites, YouTube, Yahoo!TV, etc. The video part in YouTube, Yahoo!TV works fine but I cannot hear anything and there appears to be no data streaming.
My suggest would be to take this to the forums or mailing lists or IRC, see http://en.opensuse.org/Communicate -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
